sandy, mother/employee, is off in Mexico this week so I got the job of running to the PO Box and processing check payments.

It got me thinking about payment related items....

Would those of you who prefer to pay by check/money order/cash be interested in getting a self-address envelope mailed to you a couple weeks before your expiration date, complete with renewal order number? All you'd have to do is include payment and a stamp? I figure the cost of two envelopes and a stamp is approximately the same as our credit card processing fees, and if it'd make it easier on you, why not?

Second question: Anybody experiencing problems with automatic renewal emails coming too late or not at all? We've had a few random complaints, but I'm not sure how big the problem is.

Could you make it optional? I'm sure there are people out there who'd rather not have their entire household know about their LJ.

Yeah, it'd be optional.

I'm just seeing if enough people would even want it before I put much more thought/effort into it.

I don't see the point... if they have an lj, they obviously have an e-mail address as well, which you could sent the alert to a lot easier and cheeper.

The other thing would be a lot more work.

Unless I'm reading it wrong...

i think the idea is less about reminding them to renew as it is about making it physically easier to renew. like the email has a link to here's the webpage to type in your credit card number. but if you're gonna mail in a payment, having a preaddressed envelope and a page with your account number and check off how much you're paying for can make your life a lot easier. that way you don't have to go buy envelopes and print out your name and account and all that to renew

Yes, I was wondering the same thing, specifically from the perspective of the cost to LJ. So this would be kind of an opt-in convenience feature, I see that as potentially good, though not something I personally would use, most likely.

I'd be interested in seeing a breakdown in the difference in costs between surcharges on credit card transactions and the labor required to process more traditional forms of payment -- specifically with the added costs of offering this feature, those being the labor to send the SASE, as well as the cost of the materials themselves.

Overall, though, convenience is good, and options are good, and this sounds like a relatively simple thing to implement. A little extra data structure here, a few UI widgets there, and then it's off and running. :-)

I'm glad to see that it will be optional. I'd hate to see you go to a lot of expense and I understand not wanting a LJ account advertised.

I'm glad this would be optional... I didn't even put a return address on the envelope in which I mailed my money order because my parents don't know about LJ and I'd like to keep it that way. I think it would be a great feature to offer, though!
