We've had this idea we've been kicking around for a while, and we thought we'd get some feedback from this community, because if/when we do add it, it will be a paid feature.

Basically we want to introduce individual journal statistics, complete with referral stats and unique page views. This could also include statistics that would show you how many people have linked to a specific journal entry of yours, or who have linked to you in one of their journal entries.

Keeping in mind that we won't:

  • Show you logged in viewers, because of privacy issues that could incur;

  • Show you IP addresses, because they don't reveal any useful information;

What features would you like to see in a LiveJournal stats tracker?

tracking stats

The IP address is something I have been wondering about since I started LJ about a week ago. To be honest, it was almost disappointing limited tracking was not available. I know you can get a lot of stats from free tracking progs but they are all java-based (and not usable here). If someone wants to know more than the IP, they can go to arin.net or a public tracert gateway and find out country, ISP, etc. But the IP makes a good gauge of usage for each LJ user and it may even make for a good demographics tool for LJ itself.

The only downside I see if the database(s) required for storing the data. It could either be a central storage model run by LJ (more admins needed) or a flat file dumped to the directory of each LJ user and available for viewing by the account holder. The latter leave the administration up to the LJ user but it might make for increased storage use.

Either way, I am all for IP tracking.
