Thoughts on a new feature? [Mar. 29th, 2002|06:51 pm]

We've had this idea we've been kicking around for a while, and we thought we'd get some feedback from this community, because if/when we do add it, it will be a paid feature.

Basically we want to introduce individual journal statistics, complete with referral stats and unique page views. This could also include statistics that would show you how many people have linked to a specific journal entry of yours, or who have linked to you in one of their journal entries.

Keeping in mind that we won't:

  • Show you logged in viewers, because of privacy issues that could incur;

  • Show you IP addresses, because they don't reveal any useful information;

What features would you like to see in a LiveJournal stats tracker?

tracking how many people have linked to entries and how many people have visited my journal would be fabulous.

I love referrals.

How about some way to tell if people are reading your journal through your actual journal, or through Friends lists?

Great suggestion!

I would also like to know who has been accessing my journal entries through the communities I've joined.

It would also be nice to be able to see a detailed report of which of my entries are being read the most, say for example, the top thirty or top twenty.

:-p

is it a privacy issue if you show logged in users that have you listed as a friend? Obviously, if it's a paid feature, you have to be logged in to use it-- so logic would dictate that if they list you as a friend (and you probably list them as a friend, otherwise you wouldn't want to know if they were logged in) they won't mind if you know that they're logged in.

Perhaps that's a way to do it. I know that's a feature I'd like to see.

Ok, curiousity got the best of me and I have to ask...

By logged in I assume you mean into lj? Ok, well what about people who have it so they are never logged out? Wouldnt that just show them as always on? That wouldnt be very useful then... no?

Those features all sound way cool... I'm always curious about who's curious about my journal...

Referrers would be my #1 request. If I'm being talked about or linked to, I like to know who by.... :)

That's been #1 on my list from the beginning! I think what you list is a great start, and once that gets up and running we'll think of more stats to add. The most important would be the page views, unique page views, and the link tracking.

As someone above said, the IP address shows generally where the reader is reading from, and might be nice to have. Leaving the last one off would solve the privacy issue and still have almost the same statistical value.

this is way off topic, and I apologize, but it would be nice to be able to see lists of ljs who have the most listed interests in common with you

I don't understand the privacy isses that could occur with the IP's being shown. Alot of people already use Sitemeter or Wundercounter to track IP's that visit their journal and if you have IP logging enabled in your comment preferences on LJ, you get IP numbers. So what's the difference?

i agree!

Exactly--I agree. I want IP addresses.

These are online journals, and we're talking about privacy???

Re: uh... this has nothing to do with your entry, but...

Go into the community's profile and remove yourself from the community by clicking the link at the top of the profile page.

Or just click here.

I think this would be a great feature to impliment. I would be interested to see who and how often folks link or view your entries.
