This will be posted for the benefit of those who haven't read the last news post:|
The directory (search) is up and running, and is currently only serving paid accounts, permanent accounts, and early adopter accounts. Once it is completely optimised and we can dedicate another server or two, it will be opened up to all accounts, with free accounts only having a limited subset of access.
Enjoy the new paid feature :-)
Hate to be the one to complain, but that whole "hundreds of monkeys" thing seems a bit false to me. So far it looks like maybe two or three... and one of them is having motivational issues.

I'd like to see you search through 500,000 user records quicker.

Wait a reasonable amount of time (~25 seconds seems good) and hit refresh in your browser, by which time the cache should be populated and you'll get the results you're looking for.
you have no idea how much you're thanked right now...
as a member for the past 13 months... and bein through it all... THANK YOU
Oh wow, this is so cool. Thanks!
good to see that feature up and running again.
one question though, how about setting it up so we can search for users by city, not just state?

I've been waiting for months for this, so now I see LJ has grown so much more, and there are so many to sort through.
It's great to have it back.
Just before it disappeared, it changed, and I posted my disappointment. You sorted by last entry date, and removed the state from within country. As large countries, such as Australia have over 8000 journals, the state would be a good sub section. But journalers who don't entry a state should appear LAST, i.e. after all entered states.
Perhaps if the county has over 1000 journals, use state as a sub section.
Just curious...you used to be able to get a listing of how people matched up with you, interest-wise...this went away while the directory didn't work. Will it be back?
that's so much fun...

Shouldn't that maybe be sorted into provinces like american journals are sorted into states?

Re: 21636 Canadians...
Well, if you go to http://www.livejournal.com/directorysearch.bml
, you can search by lots of other categories - such as country, state/province, city, interest, age, and all that. It seems to work quite admirably for Canada. I agree, it would be nice to have a map showing it like there is for the US, but the search capabilities are still there. (For instance, there are 43 users in St. Catharines!)
(If you have comment notifications on, sorry this came twice - I made a silly apostrophe mistake in the first one and just couldn't stand to leave it there.)
Very very cool, good work. =)
But doesn't the search by friends feature kind of invalidate the hide my 'friend of' list in profile option? Maybe there's something I'm just not seeing here? Danke. :)
