[marta]
If you have a Paid or Permanent account, you can now send 10 of your non-Paid friends a $10 coupon. Your friend will be able to purchase a Paid Account for $9.95 (instead of $19.95) for one year by enrolling in our automatic payment plan or make a manual payment of $15 (instead of $25).

  • All Paid and Permanent accounts can send out the coupons by clicking here (it's also under Friends -> Holiday promotion in the site header)
  • You can also send to people not on your Friends list by manually entering the username in the field provided
  • If your friend declines the invitation, it will be returned to your available invitation pool and you'll be able to send to someone else
  • You can send the invitations until January 15th

God, this is dumb.

Extra userpics are $10 for 12 months. If you buy the paid accoun with a coupon, plus extra userpics, you end up paying the same amount as with the previous holiday promotions.

However, you can't use the coupon to renew accounts that are still paid but will be expiring within the next few months (a number of my accounts and my friends' accounts fall into that category), and you can't actually buy accounts for friends, they have to pay for it themselves. Yeah, that's totally in the holiday spirit.

And here's the thing - if someone ends up paying the same amount of money, in the end, as they did with the traditional promotion, why the hell would you change it?

Furthermore, why would you change it without giving people advance warning? Almost everyone I know with paid accounts counts on the traditional holiday promotion - that's why so many accounts expire in December. If you weren't going to do it, and you knew you weren't going to do it, it seems misleading and idiotic to keep saying "we will have a holiday promotion in the next few weeks" and not mention that it is not the same thing LJ has been doing for years.

I love you. <3

Yes, this is a necessary comment. >>

I agree with everything that she's said. Not that I think we'll be listened to.

I know I personally will not have as many paid accounts as I did in previous years when the original promotion was available.

Honestly, I believe that most people with non-paid accounts would have gotten them by now could they afford it and thought that it was worth the money. I'd much rather be able to buy people who can't afford it paid accounts at a lower rate than give them a coupon which still requires them to pay a sizable amount.

But this can also backfire on SUP; if their account would normally be renewed in December or the first half of January (as I suspect a lot are), they can instead let their account expire and have a Paid friend send them one of these coupons after they're expired. Bingo, instant discount on something they'd have paid for anyway. Net result: SUP loses money.

BASICALLY WHAT SHE SAID BECAUSE I DO NOT HAVE THE ELOQUENCE TO SAY IT NEARLY HALF AS WELL.

But basically, it is dumb.

And after all the snowflake and notif crap, too.

I'm feeling the holiday spirit. Only not. :|

I agree with this so hard that it's painful.

Well, you can send the coupon and an LJ gift certificate for the balance if you want to buy your friend a paid account.

That being said, I prefer the Give More promotion we've had the past few years.

I feel the same way.
I really hate this "holiday" promotions. Seems more like a way for LJ to "bind" more people to them.
