Yeah, so those who don't care about their LJ and its features enough to pay for it get a present they have to pay for in order to use and those who care about their LJ and its features and pay for it don't get anything? This sounds more like the spirit of Scrooge and Grinch than the spirit of Christmas. :(
I agree with everyone else, no one wins here. People who would happily pay $15 to renew their account in a time when they just can't afford the $25 get nothing, and those who don't care either way get a $10 coupon they won't use.
I wouldn't be surprised if the lost renewals equal or exceed the new paid account.
This sucks. Most of my friends who want paid accounts already have them and I can't give them the coupons. The others don't want a paid account anyway. And a close friend and I usually 'gifted' each other a paid account with the prior holiday promotion and got the free icons. Won't be happening this year. You've lost us both, LJ. Bad move.
It's not a gift if someone has to spend money on themselves.
It's not a gift if someone has to spend money on themselves.
This. Very much this.
I've already had one invitee tell me that the coupon was not there when she went to redeem it, and I sent it to her barely 12 hours ago.
I've had that problem. No coupons have showed up and I've been sent two of them.
I think this is a really nice way of pulling in new users, but the fact that you are simultaneously not giving a damn - or so it seems to us - about the users who are already paying would have made me hesitate to actually sign up for it if I hadn't already been a paid user.
I really hope that this is just a holiday promotion and not a replacement for the Give More of previous years. To exclude such a big part of your potential market, and a part that has already shown willingness to pay for your service on top of that, makes very little sense if any for a business model.
Is LiveJournal going to do both this coupon idea and the customary Give More? Or are you really giving paying customers the figurative middle finger just in time for christmas? I'd love to get an answer to that, because while LiveJournal isn't exactly well known for its great customer treatment, I find it hard to believe that LJ as a business is that stupid.
I've had two people try to send me coupons and neither has shown up in my messages or anywhere else.
It should be going to your email, not to your Inbox on LJ. Maybe check your spam filters?
I seem to be unable to send coupons from that page, no matter what I try. I select a friend, or put them in the big box that says "type in username" and hit the big shiny send coupon button and it refreshes the page and does nothing and shows "0 coupons sent"
Yyyyeah, this is kind of useless. I have a few paid accounts I can't renew without Give More, now.
Gold star, LJ.
I also notice that staff always responds to questions but never complaints.
If staff ignores complaints, then they will go away

Well, now I'm definitely reconsidering my plans to renew my paid accounts. Last year I used the "Give More" promotion as a way to extend paid accounts for a bunch of my friends, and this year I'm told that not only can I not do that, I have to make my friends pay for part of their gift as well?
I really don't like this. All my friends that want a paid account have one. and those that don't don't want one or have no way to make a payment, meaning they couldn't use this even if they wanted to.
I really disappointed. This look like a present to LJ itself: getting yourself more paid users.
This doesn't feel like "Christmas" and "present" at all.
Right, what a "gift". Instead of actually creating a gift offer for the paying users that support you, you abuse us for marketing promotion.
Really cheap, LJ.
Joining on in the "we don't like this" comments. In and of itself, it's a perfectly valid promotion, but not if it comes in lieu of the "Give More" promotion. The only reason I have had a paid account for the past year is because it was purchased as part of last year's December "sale." As is the case with many other users, I had been waiting for this promotion to come around again in order to renew my paid account. Why are people who already have paid accounts being punished? I wish I hadn't signed up for a few months of paid time before last December; then I would have been able to ask a friend to send me a coupon when my paid account expired. As it is, my extra userpics expire at the end of the month but my paid time continues until March. As are many other users, I am extremely disappointed in this venture. Rather than solely attempting to gain new paidmembers, Livejournal should be recognizing those who already choose to pay and rewarding them. In addition, people like me, who received the paid time as a gift, should now be encouraged to continue their paid time on their own. This "holiday promotion" does not do this at all. Livejournal, if you think that people who already have paid time will continue to pay no matter what, think again. Rather than earning new paid members and keeping the ones you already have, unless you run another "program," one that is beneficial to members who have paid time remaining on their accounts, concurrently with this "coupon" one, there will likely be a decrease in the number of paid users.
(Note: this is the not the account I have the paid time on. While I know many people purchase paid time for multiple accounts, I only had one account with paid time. While I can now send coupons to my other accounts, or have friends send them to me, it is only the one account I want extra userpics on.)
I've sent out four but only one shows... and now it won't let me send more. Is it broken?
I bought a paid account a few days ago at full price. Then, boom, coupons. I'm pretty upset. I'm glad I could give a coupon to a friend who really wanted a paid account, but overall, I feel screwed over right now. Now that I have a paid account, why am I being denied the perks?

Just wanted to say that LJ Support got back to me about my unfortunate timing and were very helpful. Thank you for being understanding!

Okay, wasn't going to spend money on LJ again right now because I'm jobless. However with $10 I figured, why not?
The only thing I want to know is why it won't let me add extra icons on to the order when I use the coupon? I bought a gift certificate that'd cover the 9.95 plus the 10 for the extra icons but it won't let me add them without reverting back to the full price which is getting very annoying.
Is there any sort of comparable promotion we can use to send coupons to our LJ friends across the pond?
I'm British, and I've had no problem sending coupons to Americans who've asked me for coupons, or for gifting myself with one for a secondary account. It works just like normal no matter where the LJer in question is from.
Unless I've completely misunderstood you, in which case I apologise.
