$10 coupon for your friends! [Dec. 16th, 2009|02:59 pm]
Paid Members

If you have a Paid or Permanent account, you can now send 10 of your non-Paid friends a $10 coupon. Your friend will be able to purchase a Paid Account for $9.95 (instead of $19.95) for one year by enrolling in our automatic payment plan or make a manual payment of $15 (instead of $25).

  • All Paid and Permanent accounts can send out the coupons by clicking here (it's also under Friends -> Holiday promotion in the site header)
  • You can also send to people not on your Friends list by manually entering the username in the field provided
  • If your friend declines the invitation, it will be returned to your available invitation pool and you'll be able to send to someone else
  • You can send the invitations until January 15th

This is stupid.

"Your Christmas present is to give other people presents that they have to pay for and you get nothing."

Awesome. Thanks LJ!

ok so I just recieved one, used it, entered my credit card info and recieved an email that told me I had been changed 0.00 dollars for my new paid account. When I went to pay for said account (before I received the email) it said I would be charged the $9.95 difference, but I was not, somehow, and still have my plus account. Please explain, or help, or both.

Open up a request in Billing, and a staff member will help you out with that. :)

part of my recent post

The previous years saw a promotion called "Give More". You gave a year of paid LJ service, plus the extra icon pack, for the price of a year of paid LJ service. It could be given to basically anybody, even users who were already paid up. I had been waiting for them to start it so I could Give More to a few people this year.

Instead, they are giving me coupons that only a very small portion of my flist can even use. And what's worse, it's "YOU should spend money on LJ!" instead of "*I* am spending money on YOU on LJ!"

The whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I hope they realize their mistake and bring back Give More before the end of the holiday season.

Re: part of my recent post

Well, to be fair, as far as I know nothing stops you from buying and sending $15 gift certificates along with the coupons. But it's rather counter intuitive and takes work on the receiving end to put all together, while Give More was a convenient and straightforward package, and it only works if the users are free users instead of paid users.

People have said why the offer is tacky, so I won't rehash what people have said (and more eloquently).

It's just a thought but people who're thinking of just giving out their coupons to anyone who asks, since they have no use for it themselves (Seeing as how this is a tacky "gift)"? Might want to rethink that.

You would potentially help Livejournal get money just by doing that, which would be saying it's "really okay to do this kind of offer, and here, have some money."

Don't use them at all, in my opinion. Why help them get more money with "offers" like this?

Let's say we send one of these to a free account friend, but actually want to give them something, like the whole paid account, for example, can we then send them a gift certificate about the remaining $15 so that they can use them both?

It would be necessary to know if you can use a coupon AND a gift certificate before buying & sending the certificate.

Re: Question

Yes, it's possible - it was confirmed by staff here: http://community.livejournal.com/paidmembers/23977.html?thread=5311401#t5311401

Why have you not allowed these coupons to be used for account renewal? I can't see any benefit in doing that. If the coupons were open to renewals as well as new accounts, surely you'd be more than doubling your target market?

Instead all you've done is annoy a large number of your loyal customers, many of whom now can't afford to renew (including me) and many more who will choose not to out of principle. My paid account is ending next month and I'm struggling to find a reason to scrape together and give you my money.

The financial times are hard and I'm sure you must be losing customers as it is. Why are you alienating the ones you have left?

I'm positive I sent at least four, and I have two friends telling me they received them, but my status page says I only sent one. This features seems really borked. :(

Lame that those who have been paying all along get crap. Good job on that.

A gift our friend has to pay for? Wow.

Dear Paid/Perm User
We already have your business, now help us get new business!

Greedy love

At times like this I wish I hadn't stopped paying years ago already, so I could stop paying again!
