$10 coupon for your friends! [Dec. 16th, 2009|02:59 pm]
Paid Members

If you have a Paid or Permanent account, you can now send 10 of your non-Paid friends a $10 coupon. Your friend will be able to purchase a Paid Account for $9.95 (instead of $19.95) for one year by enrolling in our automatic payment plan or make a manual payment of $15 (instead of $25).

  • All Paid and Permanent accounts can send out the coupons by clicking here (it's also under Friends -> Holiday promotion in the site header)
  • You can also send to people not on your Friends list by manually entering the username in the field provided
  • If your friend declines the invitation, it will be returned to your available invitation pool and you'll be able to send to someone else
  • You can send the invitations until January 15th

A legitimate question: This + Gift Cert? (no whining at LJ, I swear)

Can I send this to a friend and also send her a gift certificate for whatever will end up being the difference? Like, if I send her this coupon, and then also buy her a $25 gift certificate- would that essentially let me pay for her $15 year of LJ as well as the $10 year of extra userpics? Or does this promotion preclude me spending my own money on her renewing her LJ, for some reason?

I just woke up and reading through all the whiny bitches on this post to see if someone's asked this has fried my brain, so please forgive me if this was asked before and I just didn't see it.

Someone asked this on the news post, and the answer was that yes, it is possible.

Yes, this. There is no coupon code, and clicking on the link just takes me to the redemption page, with the $19.95 option, with no way to take the $10 off.

if I am going to send my friend something crappy I would rather it be one of those burger king greeting cards with a dollar in it

And by the way, I actually am excited about this. I have 3 PAs and one paid account that hasn't expired yet. So that's a lot of coupons to give out - 40 of my friends! But I'm afraid I won't be giving them out until I know people won't think it's a half-a-discount.

Echoing what many others said, it's pretty crappy that this cannot be used to gift to other paid users to help them cover the costs of renewal. So many are short on funds at this time of the year and a coupon to help them cover the costs would be helpful.

I know I sure probably won't be able to afford to renew all my paid accounts, and since one doesn't expire until the 20th of January, well looks like LJ won't be getting any more money from me for that one, because I'm always short on cash in January.

On top of that, I think it's pretty crappy that it can't be used towards shorter than one year of time. Many people get paid time on role-playing journals and can't honestly say now if they will still be playing the character in a year (I know the last time I bought a year on a RP account, it ended up being a waste). It would be nice to be able to use the coupon to get 6 months for what I was normally paying for 2 months rather than having to pay for a year and have most of it possibly go to waste. And the sad part is, in the long run I pay more by buying shorter amounts of time so LJ is actually getting more money from people like myself who don't feel confident buying a whole year. True, there is a risk that I won't renew in six months, but if I do, that's more money in LJ's pocket.

Seriously, do consider allowing for a six month time period at a savings along with giving these to other paid users. In the long run you may well make more money that way.

I actually like this. Too bad none of my LJ friends have a paid/permanent account for me to beg a coupon from.

Yeah, I agree with mostly everyone else: where's my 'reward,' seeing as I've already paid? I'm not doing this. If my friends' want a paid account, they'll have to pay the same amount I did, kthx. >:(

I guess the recession has hit el-jay a little late if you aren't continuing the "give more" promotion.

Sending coupons doesn't work

I've tried several times now (maybe 6 times) to send my friend wiredferret a coupon. I'm not getting any error messages, but the number of coupons I've sent/have left does not change from 0/10. I have tried all possible permutations - checking the box next to her name, entering her name in the box below, with and without messages, etc. No joy. What's up?

P.S. I'm on a Mac running version 3.5.5 of Firefox, but I think that shouldn't matter for this simple web form.

This is sort of like asking for a videogame or something for Christmas and getting socks from K-mart.

Well, I feel adequately trolled. :| I had thought that this would be free, since I don't have a credit card I can pay for the 10 bucks at all.

So. A+ on trolling, LJ.

I already left a comment in the news post, but I might as well reiterate it here: I'll give my coupons to anyone who asks. I don't have any use for them myself. So if you want one, just let me know.
