We've had some conversations recently about some of the reasons people buy Paid Accounts. Rather than try to guess, we wanted to ask you why *you* have a Paid (or Permanent) Account. Hence, a poll.

On the first question, we're looking for the handful of top reasons you have a Paid Account, so please check any of the options that were motivating factors for you. On the second, we ask that you try to narrow it down to the single biggest reason. If there was a primary or motivating reason for you that we haven't listed, please do add it in the text box provided.

Poll #1368228 What motivated you to have a Paid Account?

Please select the three to five biggest reasons you have a Paid Account

Thank you!

No, not at all. This is really just so that we can understand more about the motivations for buying a Paid Account.

Yea, but you said that in the original post. /why/ do you want to understand the motivations?

Just curious (nothing to do with any project or "official" LJ business?
A project that may change the way LJ works?
An investigation into whether Paid pricing is in the right range?
Something else?

I don't have a paid account anymore, so I can't answer the poll, but I am curious to know why you're asking.

This post to lj_advisory says:

New Paid and Premium Services
The expansion and enhancement of premium features are a big priority for LJ in 2009. We'll be asking the Advisory Board for their views on the new services we're working on, and we want your views to be represented, too. What kind of premium features are you most interested in? Should we do more with v-gifts? Who should we partner with to best add value to the site and boost the number of Paid Accounts? What's the best way for LJ to merchandise its own goods across the globe? What other kind of features should we offer? Let us know what you think.

I imagine they want to know how they can make more money by having people buy paid accounts, part of which means entailing understanding why people buy them in the first place.

Frankly, there are features of LJ that I'd love for them to make entirely ala carte, so that people don't have to buy a full Paid Account in order to use them; userpics would be my top answer to "what should be on that list?"

Userpics expansion, Scrapbook access, and per-usage polls (or "so many per month" of paid time) could be separated out, I think, while remaining default features of Paid Accounts with the policy that "you will never have less" until the paid time expires; ala carte items would be added to account features, within certain limits such as storage space, or perhaps any remaining time would be tacked onto the end of the Paid Acccount period. So ala carte userpics expansion would be added to the account total (as it already is), while ala carte Scrapbook access would be tacked onto the end (to reduce storage space requirements), and of course "per usage" polls would be tacked onto the end or just gifted back as vouchers/gift cards since a Paid Account has essentially unlimited polls per month (v-gift incentive, anyone?).

If the fees for those three items separately added up to slightly more than what a Paid Account costs on its own (provided you post a certain number of polls per month), that would be incentive to get a Paid Account. When my account expired, I seriously missed having those userpics with which to express myself, but I also would have been okay with occasionally paying a dollar in order to post a poll instead of beg for comments (polls get more responses, and hey, they're at least as valuable as v-gifts). Also, since I don't have a Flickr account, I like having the Scrapbook available to me; and I've seen how my father uses his to share tons of photos he's taken.

Now, this might mean that more people would buy userpics and a few polls and just let ads run; but it might also mean that people who no longer want to pay for a full account might consider paying a lesser amount to keep their userpics available even if they let the other features lapse.

There's a lot of factors under the surface to this; for a good review, I recommend reading [DW Discuss] Paid account design (was: RP use cases and styles) and [DW Discuss] Paid account design (was: RP use cases and styles). Basically, it's a very difficult logistical undertaking with a dubious end benefit.

You've duplicated your links, here, but the one message does make things clearer, thank you.

Oh dear! Sorry about that--this is the other one, which explains more on how it's difficult to do this in LJ's current architecture, so that doing these payments is a large undertaking.
