Hey, how about why people don't get a paid account?
Let's see, lack of communication with LJ members. How many times, despite changes in ownership, has LJ knee-jerked and don't something really stupid? When management finally realizes they've done something stupid, we get a mumbled half-ass apology, and that's it. No "hey, we screwed up, here's how, and here are the steps we're taking to make sure it doesn't happen again."
Yeah. The LJ representative thing. That was a stroke of sheer idiocy.
The abuse team. Good god, the incompetence. The fact that I nearly got my journal banned because the incompetent boob in abuse was incorrectly citing copyright law (parroting what the accuser fed him) despite me linking to the actual law still annoys me to no end. On top of that the continued claims of "we don't know what's really being said because it's marked as a private entry" is extremely lame and transparent. Excuses like this are what lets the pro-anorexia communities exist while fandom communities get shut down.
For these reason and many more, I do not have a paid account, nor will I ever pay for an account until these things are fixed.
I know people will want to reply with either (a) troll accusations or (b) the usual comment of "if you hate it so much here, why won't you leave?" I'm not a troll, and I didn't say I hate it here. I do like LJ, and I've been here since 2001. I have a lot of good friends on here, although some of them have left for Facebook, MySpace, etc. I want LJ to improve, and I would have no problem giving them my money... if I knew that it would be used wisely and not pissed away while glaring issues like the above listed exist.
I responded to the poll indicating 'no ads' - but the reason I obtained a paid account over five years ago was because I liked the service and respected the individual efforts that went into it. It had a face. It had names. It wasn't some big faceless corporation.
Were I considering moving from free account to paid now, my current motivation is how I answered the poll.
If paid users ever start seeing advertisements on LJ I will conclude that the site is long past its sell-by date and bail out.
I'll certainly be considering doing the same. I've already snagged an Inksome account, and if Dreamwidth is half as good as it sounds will do my best to snag an invite code to that too.
The ads thing was not a thing when I bought my account, so it wasn't a factor in the beginning. It's definitely a reason to keep the paid account now, and actually, I'm getting kind of angry thinking about it.
If we still had the invite code system, LJ would not be so large as to require ad-revenue to begin with.
Are FormerPaids allowed to vote with the reasons why we had one, when we were still paid, or are we sort of anathema here?
The post is not locked and the poll is open to all so it seems to me they want everybody's opinion.
In this case I think they're looking to see what could lure more people to go paid in future: what sort of features induce people to pony up. Which, fair enough, this is a commercial operation, they need to be sure of their revenue streams; they aren't going to bite either of the hands that feed them (advertisers on the one hand, subscribers on the other) if they can help.
Click on the link that says "Poll #NNNNN
" and that should take you to a page or to a link where you can input your answers.
To qualify my answers, I've had a paid account for longer than many of the features listed on the poll have even existed. That said, while I enjoy those features, they don't really play into my reasons for sustaining a paid account (although editing comments truly is a boon I would miss were I to give up the paid account).

One of my selections was "mobile features", but it has been over 6 months now that TxtLJ hasn't worked with Verizon. If it's not fixed before my paid account expires in October, I'm not renewing.
If it helps any, I'm willing to bet the TXTLJ issue is more with Verizon than with LiveJournal...I mean, Verizon really isn't the brightest cellular crayon in the box.
O_o Most people saying it's because of ads and not because of any features reserved to paid users makes paid accounts seem really lame.
I dunno. I think it's more a sign of how much many paid users hate ads. They may like a lot of the features, but ads are so offputting that they float to the top, even though a lot of the people answering would buy a paid account if ads weren't a factor.
Originally I got a paid account b/c in order to get an LJ account it was either that or get someone to give me an invite code, and I didn't know anyone with invite codes. Then I decided I ~had~ to have a custom mood theme, so I kept paying. And over time, all the other features of paid/perm accounts won me over as well. Currently, not having ads is my favorite benefit, though I definitely regularly use a lot of the other features.

Originally got one so I could post by email, which was a big deal while deployed.
Kept one after ads came in because I for one don't want to subject my readers to ads they thought they'd never have to see.
Definitely the icons! Honestly, there should be an option to buy the icons without needing a paid account first. I know for a fact that a lot of my friends feel the same way I do; we're very hesitant to buy paid accounts when all we use are comment editing and the icons. We end up paying for what we don't even use. (The only reason I actually have a paid account is because of gifts from my friends)
You would have a ton of money from users if you gave the option to just buy the add-ons you actually want!
This also stems back to the A-la-carte userpics - has there been any progress with that at all?
Once upon a time ...
there where no adds on LJ.
Neither the ability to edit comments
Neither Mobile features (text via profile, voice post, TXTLJ
Neither Mass-edit security level of posts
That was when I've got my paid account. :)
For the icon - because then we had *thinks* four (? not sure at the moment)
I think the number of icons free accounts got went from 1 to 3 to 6. I think I remember when it went from 1 to 3.
Honestly, if I could just buy more userpics without having to get a paid account, I would. I don't really use any of the other features offered.
