We've had some conversations recently about some of the reasons people buy Paid Accounts. Rather than try to guess, we wanted to ask you why *you* have a Paid (or Permanent) Account. Hence, a poll.

On the first question, we're looking for the handful of top reasons you have a Paid Account, so please check any of the options that were motivating factors for you. On the second, we ask that you try to narrow it down to the single biggest reason. If there was a primary or motivating reason for you that we haven't listed, please do add it in the text box provided.

Poll #1368228 What motivated you to have a Paid Account?

I have a permanent account and I rely on Scrapbook like I rely on oxygen these days. I really wish you guys would work on it, or at LEAST fix how broken it has been these last couple of weeks. I would give you guys *more money* if I could have a ramped up Scrapbook, maybe with a slightly more intuitive file organizer, less idiotic style choices, and the ability to put html in my gallery descriptions. I would pay for this annually, like a paid account, seriously, on *top* of my perm account. I wish I could have separate Scrapbooks, one for a portfolio and one for all my other stuff. I think you could pull a lot of people away from the doom that is DeviantArt that way.

Back when I came to LJ, the fact that it was ad-free was a major incentive in selecting it over many other similar or equivalent options (I actually came over from Open Diary). I bought a permanent account in those days, because I appreciated that LJ needed its funding to come from somewhere and I really wanted to support it. I also bought paid accounts for friends on the same principle.

I would probably not choose to pay for LJ today. Oh, I'm more than happy to keep using the account I've got... but if I was looking at buying a paid account for the first time, I'd be balking. If I had to put up with ads where-ever I was posting my blog, I'd just keep one on Facebook. All the other little doohickeys are nice, but I enjoyed LJ a lot more when the organization had a little more character and class. Yes, I know ads are pretty standard everywhere on the web. I loved that LJ didn't settle for standard. I liked that they were able to offer the "more options" carrot without resorting to the advertising stick.

I had a paid account from Day 1 long before ads and extra features. I also bought a permanent account as soon as they were offered.

I had a paid account before there were ads, so if I take that out of the equation, the reason was because I love LJ & was happy to pay for it.

Now that there are ads, if Mr Dbaxdevilsfan hadn't gotten me a permanent account for my birthday a few years ago, I'd have a paid account to avoid the ads. A lack of ads was one of the big selling points when I came to LJ.

My original reason for purchasing a paid account was that I honestly liked LJ and was happy to pay for it. Started with a free account, no ads, and appreciated this. So I paid to support a site I liked, and got more userpics and greater ability to customize as a bonus.

I skimmed the poll, but I'd like to add that editing comments is another reason I pay.

I like the Paid account features, but I wish they worked! The voiceposts used to get cut after one minute for people outside the US (since 2007!), and now they don't work at all. Scrapbook has been horribly unreliable in the past few weeks. It's fair enough that problems occur once in a while, but for a paid service they should get fixed a lot quicker than this.

For the record apparently the voicepost issue has to do with the telephone companies that provide the voicepost line, and not with LJ themselves. LJ can only do so much until the phone companies fix it. Still sucks though :(

I'd settle for a way to disable people from friending me.

That is the best idea for a new feature I've heard in a long time. They really should look into it.

I bought a Paid Account only for the userpics; it was the only feature I cared about, quite frankly. I ultimately decided that it wasn't worth it to pay for the status of being a paid member, and THEN pay for the userpics on top of that, when that was the only feature I wanted in the first place.

If there were a way to pay only for the added userpics, without any of the other features, I would strongly consider it.

Thiiiiiis. There is absolutely nothing LJ offers that I can't mock up with an outside service, block, or do without. I didn't like having to pay for a bunch of features I didn't need just to get more icons. Now, I've gotten so used to just six that, much as I would like more, it's still not worth it to pay at all.

So yeah. About those a la carte icons we keep hearing so little about.

There are things I like about having a paid account that wouldn't induce me to purchase a paid account. Your poll did not take that into account. No pun intended.

For what it's worth, the initial question doesn't distinguish between why you have a paid account now and why you made the jump to paid status in the first place.

My first year of paid time was a gift, and if that gift hadn't been made I would probably have just kept my basic account as it was. But when the expiration date approached I found that I didn't really want to go back and have to think about whether I was going to see advertising on people's plus accounts (or anywhere, really - I hate advertising with a fiery passion). And so I've kept the paid account for years, when without that initial gift I wouldn't have it at all.

Inertia, it's a wonderful thing.

I like the no ads+more userpics, of course, but mainly I just like using LJ and I've had this account for like five years now, so I have no problem with contributing to it's upkeep. ^^

The status is nice too. XD
