We've had some conversations recently about some of the reasons people buy Paid Accounts. Rather than try to guess, we wanted to ask you why *you* have a Paid (or Permanent) Account. Hence, a poll.

On the first question, we're looking for the handful of top reasons you have a Paid Account, so please check any of the options that were motivating factors for you. On the second, we ask that you try to narrow it down to the single biggest reason. If there was a primary or motivating reason for you that we haven't listed, please do add it in the text box provided.

Poll #1368228 What motivated you to have a Paid Account?

Please select the three to five biggest reasons you have a Paid Account

I went Permanent during the last sale, which was mostly for the reason that I can't see myself leave LJ and my friends here anytime soon (unless management and LJ itself really start to suck), so this saves me money in the long run, plus I don't have to renew each year.

Back when I went paid, there weren't any ads, additional userpics, or the ability to edit comments, so more customization options were the main reason. However I love the additional userpics and thank goodness paid members don't have to see ads, both definitely were contributing reasons for me to keep renewing, until going Permanent. While I do have a customised mood theme, it's a nice to have feature for me.

@livejournal.com forwarding email address

I didn't vote for this, but it was one of the reasons I'd signed up for a paid account at the time I did.

Why didn't I vote for it? Because this functionality hasn't worked for me for over a year. The explanation given was that Yahoo! was blocking the mail.

Having worked with ISPs in the past, and with friends who still do, I expected that LJ would work with Yahoo! to get this sorted out. As far as I can tell, it never has been. So I've had to stop using it.

In spite of the impression that people generally have of those who pay for their RP accounts, like I do, my reasons have nothing to do with userpics. If anything, I had trouble even digging up fifteen icons that were suitable.

In my case, it has everything to do with the ability to edit comments. Were it not for that, I probably would not have paid for this RP account and had just left it as a Plus Account (although not forcing ads upon myself or anyone else is rather nice, as is comment thread expansion).

Since my reasons for paying for my RP accounts are slightly different than those for why my personal journal is paid, I will vote a second time, logged in under my personal journal. Please let me know if this is not okay.

By the way, I'm speaking strictly as the player here; this comment is not meant to be "in-character."

Forgot about paid features

I've sort of lost sight of all the features that come with a paid account. I knew about some of the obvious ones like advertising. However, I forgot about comment editing (which I use), mobile tools, voice posting and polls.

When I bought my permanent account, ads were JUST coming into being via "plus" accounts, so I did not buy it for that reason. But it is one of the biggest reasons I am happy to have a permanent account now.

I had a paid account for a while, then let it lapse through laziness/cheapness, and later bought a permanent account so I could get the customization options of a paid account without ever having to remember to pay again.

No ads is a biggie for me too - but since I went from a paid account to a perm account that wasn't the driving reason at the time. Employment has been more uncertain in recent years so I paid for a Perm account when I could because I like and enjoy using LJ and the paid account options and this way I wouldn't have to worry about not being able to afford them if I happened to unemployed the next time it was time to renew, etc.

This was my reason for upgrading to a perm account, as well.

I've been on Livejournal for almost 9 years. Originally an Early Adopter I bought my permenant account on the second sale that was done.

The reasons that I did this (and my husband too) was that we were big believers in the site and of Brad and wanted to show our support and help keep it going as back in the day he did the perm account sales to raise money to keep the site afloat.

Still believe in the site to this day even with all the changes of ownership.

I filled out this poll for the reasons I had a paid account, though I have recently let it lapse. The lapse had little to do with changes at LJ, and much more to do with my own financial security (or lack thereof) in the current economy. Although I continue to use my livejournal, the paid account was definitely an unnecessary expense, and when I had to cut costs somewhere, it wasn't a tough choice.

I chose to become a paid member of the livejournal community a few years ago, mostly because I was using my free account so much and getting so much out of it (at no cost) that I felt I ought to give something back. I appreciated paid features, such as polls and later comment editing, which came along with it, but the features were not really the reason for signing up. I feel I've done my part now, and though I would continue to pay if finances were easy, it's not at the top of the priority list while they're tough.

Also, perhaps I should mention that I use AdBlockerPlus on firefox -- a free add-on that prevents me from seeing ads, even when I'm looking at accounts that would otherwise have them. Which may be why ads, which seem to be the number one reason for other people, have no influence on my decisions. The one thing I miss now that I'm on a free account is the comment editing. I constantly post things and then think, oh, I should have said this differently.

Yay for polls~

Although I PAID for the userpics foremost, the reason I STAY at LJ at ALL is because of the communities I'm involved within it. Just wanted to keep that in focus.

I wanted the userpics -- and I love scrapbook. Please, PLEASE work on scrapbook. :( It needs more delicate love and care. Besides, now I'm a perm user, so I'm stuck with you.

I really like the not having to deal with ads. I had a Plus account for like 5 minutes before I moved to Paid and then eventually Perm status. But the number one reason was the userpics. I like being able to have so many of them.

But we can get copies of our comments emailed to us? I never knew that. I'll have to check the FAQ to see how to set it up. Because my answer might change then. I'm always forgetting what I say and where. LOL
