What about changing reasons? The primary reason why I started paying for LiveJournal six and a half years ago is not the primary reason I pay for LiveJournal now.
I would have to agree with you. I have a permanent account, so I can't even say 'this is why I keep paying for an account'. Thus, editing (while important to me) wasn't really on my mind when I answered the poll.
No ads wasn't my primary reason for buying it in the first place (it was the custom mood themes, which is funny as I hardly use mine any more...) but it's probably the main reason I keep renewing it.
The main reason I have a paid account now (Only until I can get a DW account) is that I rely on Scrapbook heavily. Photobucket is atrocious to deal with, flicker is annoying to direct link to, and my own webhosting doesn't like to show images to people not in north america.
My journal hosts galleries of my work as advertising for the community (Cosplay) and the scrapbook feature (With the batch upload option) has seriously been a godsend. Even if it's annoying to code and could use some tweaks, it's simple and it works for me. Unlike... most of LJ.

scrapbook could use a LOT of tweaks.
I could give two completely separare answers for "why did you get a paid account in the first place?" and "why do you keep renewing your paid account?" Which one do you want? Many of these features weren't around when I started.
Answer for whichever you'd like, or just whatever you feel strongest about now. This isn't scientific or for a particular purpose, just for general feelings or priorities so that we can have a better handle on them when we discuss it.
If you'd asked two years ago, my single biggest reason would have been that I liked lj and was happy to pay; these days it's mostly habit and partly courtesy to people reading, I don't want to subject them to ads. (Back then, I also would have chosen userpics as a big bonus, as well as polls - I'm not sure which one of us changed the most since then)
On my other lj, which is in Norwegian and has mostly readers that don't come via my flist, I bought a paid account simply because I felt bad about subjecting said random browsers to ads (especially, I want to add, because they - not being familiar with lj - might think that I've chosen to display ads on my site, and that's so untrue and far from what I want to project that I finally couldn't stand it any longer). The only reason I haven't migrated the whole thing to wordpress (or some such site) is that I'm too lazy to do it.
I would have chosen the "No ads" thing, but that wasn't an issue when I bought my account. Although, neither was editing comments, but I still chose that because the reason I like my account is for the added features/functionalities.
the biggest reason I'll keep getting a paid account (other than no ads+more userpics) is to be able to expand comments on unpaid journals. It's a lifesaver♥
I luff comment expansion. Loooooove.
I forgot to add a "something not on the list" reason why I have a paid account:
"Helps keep Marta fed." :-)

It'd seem a lot of people are of the mind that they like it to the point that they feel it's worth paying for. The fact that said money actually goes to things like feeding the staff and servers seems to be secondary. ;-)
Has the user rep actually done anything? As far as I can tell the whole election farce simply gave us someone with a title and sod all else - no powers, no responsibilities, no effect.
The question that should have been asked was whether people went to paid / permanent before or after free accounts got ads. Of course the statistics are there if anyone wants to look them up. I suspect that before ads the main reasons were to support LJ and to get polls, icons, etc. - after ads the overwhelming reason, not surprisingly, is to get rid of the damn advertising.
Hear hear. This is certainly true in my case.
The ability to customize was the reason and now maybe no ads, but the sole reason for me being a paid user is more userpics. I even bought an add-on for userpics, but I let it expire because I would rather see an ala carte option rather than having to be forced into buying a paid account for this option.
The userpics thing is a big reason for me too. My preference would be being able to have a basic account (so no ads), but still being able to buy the 100 userpics upgrade. But of course they'd lose a ton of paid accounts that way, so I can see why they don't do it. Would be nice if that was an option though.
I am surely not the only person who finds this faintly suspicious in a sort of 'which features could we remove without anyone caring?' way.
Personally, the Polls are probably actually the biggest thing about paid accounts for me. That and people not having to wade through ads if they look at my lj.
I'd be interested to know the reasons for this question, and particularly, how the answers might affect what is available (and what is not) to paid users in the future.
I think I got a paid account a while ago just for more userpics. Then, I kept renewing it because I became used to all the little extra features though honestly, I don't use a lot of them. :o
I wish I could use mobile LJ, which I understand an issue with Verizon. Any progress about this?
I totally use that on my iphone! rocks!
