We've had some conversations recently about some of the reasons people buy Paid Accounts. Rather than try to guess, we wanted to ask you why *you* have a Paid (or Permanent) Account. Hence, a poll.

On the first question, we're looking for the handful of top reasons you have a Paid Account, so please check any of the options that were motivating factors for you. On the second, we ask that you try to narrow it down to the single biggest reason. If there was a primary or motivating reason for you that we haven't listed, please do add it in the text box provided.

Poll #1368228 What motivated you to have a Paid Account?

I'd really like to see support for the flash embed of Twitter on an LJ layout page. I tried to put it on mine three times, completely destroying my layout even after I took it off (took a half an hour to fix) before finally reading that it was totally incompatible with LJ. I see that LJ doesn't allow embed tags, but Twitter is becoming really huge and most other blog sites allow it (opendiary, wordpress, typepad etc) - is it something that is being thought about, at least?

I bought a permanent account the year I started my journal (2001) because I knew I would be here for a long time and it would eventually pay for itself. I paid $100 for the perm status - happy to say it paid itself off in '05 and I haven't paid a dime since.

*edited for typo - gawds I love that feature.

I bought a paid account because:

A. I wanted more userpics.
B. Seeing ads on my journal pissed me off because they usually messed up my journal layout.

I REALLY like not having to bother with ads (and I just like LiveJournal). After that, everything else is just gravy...delicious, delicious gravy.

I got a paid account before ads were added to the site. I had an account for a few years (around 3 to 4 years) and I wanted upgrade. I really liked the many features of a paid account.

I've been a member since '04 and couldn't afford a paid account then but seeing as I'm still here and spent most of my internet time here I figured it'd be a good bet. I get all the advantages and support a place I have come to love.

Plus icons. I love icons.

I am a paid user, have been for three years, which means you have $90 from me, and I have not received LJ notifications for two-and-a-half weeks. I have verified that the problem is not with Yahoo!Mail. LJ is on my whitelist. I have also tried switching to gmail and a POP account, and still have not received notifications. The problem is on LJ's end. I expect to receive an additional 2.5 weeks added to my paid account + userpics time, because I have not received the LiveJournal experience that I pay $30 a year for--I am busy, and it's impossible for me to keep track of comments I leave on other people's blogs when I don't receive comment notifications. I also have not received notification of private messages I've received, causing me to miss out on a housing opportunity. My support requests have been ignored.

Please fix this.

I have a hard time saving it, since the page never loads... is something wrong with your server :S?

I'm late to this shindig but I really want to ask a pertinent question:

When will the proposed a la carte userpics come to fruition? Or has the plan been nixed?

It's evident from the poll that userpics are at least the second-leading impetus for users (those who watch this community, anyway -- I have a feeling it's actually more if we consider the entire user base) to buy paid accounts and extra userpics.

I can't even count the number of accounts I have created (role-play purposed), and the number I have paid for.

The payment and ad structure at LiveJournal bothers me, but I would sacrifice more funds if that's what it took to get "a la carte" userpics. I want them that badly.

I don't know how many userpics the staff were considering awarding users, or whether the staff will go forward in the much smarter direction of offering a separate option for users who only wish to buy userpics and none of the other benefits, and I don't know where this issue is being discussed on the server, so I wanted to at least address it here. Please direct me elsewhere if such a place exists.

eta: Here we are, I knew I'd seen it months ago, but I couldn't remember if I had imagined the November date or not. So, the release didn't happen exactly on time, but whether that means it's still in the works or it's been canceled isn't clear.

eta the second: The reason I had a hard time remembering where this topic had been discussed previously is that I couldn't remember the name of the community suggestions -- and only after trawling through entries there did I see a link, provided by a user and not a staff member, in the comments to the lj_2008 entry.

It would probably help a great number of users if you add a link to one or both of these communities, to the list that is already there, in the profiles of their sister communities (i.e. paidmembers, lj_biz, news, feedback, and et cetera). If not lj_2008 -- because I do understand that it is now 2009 (although no entry communication has been released at lj_2009) -- then at least suggestions. I think it may be the only staffed support community left out of the list, but I'm not certain.

To put it shortly, I have failed to find any follow-up commentary by the staff on this topic. Please do excuse if I've simply overlooked something! Thanks.

I am bemused by the number of people who don't install free adblocking software (which works across all websites), but instead pay to have no ads on just one website.

I'm not as satified with my paid account as I used to be. I used to pay for extra features, and I felt really good about where my money was going. Now I pay so that my journal doesn't turn into an internet version of a Las Vegas strip, and I don't feel good about where my money is going. I feel like I'm being conned into paying to keep a service I used to get for free.

I've started using other journal sites because of this.

Adblock save my time and money. I don't need more userpics, features and options. "Other people don't see ads when they view my journal" is biggest and only reason.

For me, I bought paid time mostly because the ads were annoying me and I didn't want them on my journal anymore. I'm happy paying $5 a pop so the ads will go away.

I did it for the userpics

I bought a paid account ONLY for more userpics. That was the main reason I've always wanted one, and the reason I did, eventually, buy one. It's also the reason why I'm going to buy up a permanent account the next time they go on sale.

The scrapbook storage is nice, too- and if I used the domain forwarding, that would be convenient, although I'm not using it now...

Really, though, I did it for the userpics. I think that most of my subbed friends did it for the pics, too. (I can now have a userpic for ALL THREE of my cats... There's not really much point in this, but they're cute, so...)

BTW I love the ability to pay extra for more userpics. Please keep that feature! :)
