Pingbacks

As announced in news today, Pingbacks have arrived on LiveJournal! For the time being, this feature is limited to Paid Accounts. More information can be found in the FAQ.

Here is how it works: your entry (as Paid user) is linked to by another (Paid) user. As long as both entries are public, and you have your comment settings set so that you can receive comments from all registered users, you will receive a screened comment from pingback_bot showing you the link to your entry. All comments by pingback_bot will be screened, regardless of your account settings - you can choose to unscreen them if you wish. Pingbacks to and from Paid Accounts can also be sent to and from any blog that supports the Pingback protocol. If you would like external sites to interact with your entries through Pingbacks, you'll need to change your default setting for Pingbacks to "Open".

We're aware that some pingbacks aren't working, but don't have enough data to determine the cause. If you try out pingbacks and they don't work, please let us know! Here's how! EDIT 3/6/09: If you haven't yet been able to send or receive Pingbacks, you can resolve the issue by going to the Privacy tab on the My Account Settings page, scroll to the bottom and click "Save". Although the default setting is "LiveJournal.com only", this setting is not recognized until settings are changed or saved. This will be fixed in the next release.

1. First, make sure that you and the person linking to your entry are both Paid users and that both entries are public. The default setting for Pingbacks will be "LiveJournal.com only," but you can check or change that on the Privacy tab of your Account Settings page.

2. Make sure your comment settings allow comments from either "registered users" or "everybody" and that you have your CAPTCHA setting for comments on "anonymous commenters" or "nobody".

3. Wait 15 minutes - this is the amount of time needed for the Pingback system to check and deliver the ping. If you don't see the comment from pingback_bot, comment here with a link to the entry that didn't get the pingback. Developers will monitor the comments here and we hope to have this issue resolved as soon as we can.

View Friends Page by Date works in S1

In December, we announced the Paid feature View Friends Page by Date. At that time, it was not compatible with journals using the S1 Style System due to the fact that S1 had been retired and deprecated. In January, developers investigated and created a fix - so if you're still using S1 you can now view your friends page by date to your heart's content!

I'd rather more userpics and the ability to do the voice-posty thing here in Australia :p

Neat as these are, I'm wondering if there's been any progress on the whole 'Calling the Canadian voice post number and getting dropped after a minute' issue... It wouldn't be so bad if I could just call the number in the states (like I used to before we had a number up here, being that it's all LD for me anyways) but that's not an option anymore. It's been 'said' on the support area, of course, that this is being looked into but as this has been going on as long as it has, I'm inclined to doubt that.

Why not use the message system to notify about linking (since it's a system for sending notifications) so you don't need to allow users to comment on your entries to receive information?

There's plenty of writers who, for instance, are writing original fiction and some would probably like to know who is recommending them or their story. Same with people writing more 'scholarly' and research-based work. They too would probably like to know who's linking others to their post[s].

Re-Titling Username Question

Awesome-Sauce. Thanks for this! here's hoping it [the pingback] works, lol :)

Also - what is the reason for creating the retitling option? I don't understand the benefits.

Re: Re-Titling Username Question

Where did you hear about the re-titling option? I've never heard of that!

*whoosh* that's the sound of the explanation going over my head.

*waves* That's me not caring for whatever the feature does anyway.

Cool, but why won't paid (and, I imagine, permanent) users get pingbacks if the user referencing their post does not have a paid/perm account? :) I can obviously understand restricting the feature itself to paid/perm users, but...

Database load, we're testing it for them so they can get it to work for everyone.

Guess what, I learned this in a comment buried deep in the releases comm. Rather than it simply being at the top in the post like you'd expect given it's both an obvious question and something that isn't a paid account benefit as such.

Every time I think they've learnt...

I like this one a lot. Hope it's successful enough to expand to non-paid users, too.

I won't be using either.

But I don't understand why we don't get more userpics. I mean, if we're willing to pay for them! I'd happily pay to upgrade my 123 userpics to 200, or even 150!

Doesn't LJ want our money!?

Will pingback work in communities?

Why is this done in the form of screened comments rather than just e-mails?

This is a very good point, I also would prefer email notification.

I'm amused/suprised how many people dont seem to understand (or have ever heard of the concept of) trackback/pingbacks and can't see where it'd be useful.

Does this work in communities so long as the person posting has a paid account? Would the community need to have a paid account, or does it just work in personal journals?

If the majority of LJ-ers are smart and keep their posts f-locked or private, then why the heck would we need pingbacks? What's the freaking point?

Oh, boy, you have TWO HUGE suppositions in your if statement (1) that the majority of LJ-ers are smart and (2) the majority of LJ-ers keep their posts flocked or private.

I have no opinion on one, but I strongly suspect that 2 is not the case in absolute terms, and I know for a fact there are many subcultures on LJ for whom 2 is not true.
