Okay... I have to ask here, among other users who agree that LJ is worth paying for.
...do you believe a permanent account is WORTH $175? That's 7 years of payments at the current rate. Does that seem a little... extreme to any of you? I mean, that's almost as long as LJ has existed at all. They used to cost $100, which was steep enough as is.
I love LJ, but... the cost just seems to outstrip the product.
I wouldn't drop nearly 200 bucks on it, honestly. :\ That's like, 2/3rds of my rent.
I wish my rent were that cheap. That's more like 10% of my rent.
I had a free account for six years before buying a permanent account a year and a half ago. So I considered it worth it.
It depends on how long you plan on using lj for, how long you expect the service to be around for, etc.
The professional societies I am a member of, I believe lifetime membership costs about 10 years worth of dues. The point they always make is that (a) you are locking in the current price and (b) you never have to worry about paying dues again (say if you become unemployed). You could make the same arguments for lj. Personally, $175 is a lot of money to drop at once, and $20 doesn't hurt much. Otoh, I've been on lj for nearly 4 years so I'm reaching that break even point. *shrugs*
I'd consider getting a perm account if they CREDITED me for all the years I've been a paid user. $175 is just a stupid amount of money. C'mon, LJ, really.
Maybe I should have gotten a perm account back when they were $100... of course, all the money I've put toward paid accounts in the 7+ years I've been here, I could have afforded a permanent account by now, anyway! -_- $175 is ridiculous...
You should factor in extra userpics and storage space, which makes the price a bit more reasonable.
I paid $150, and I feel it's worth it. Coming up on 2 years now and I'm certain I'll be here for another 4 to "pay it off" so to speak. It is getting slightly pricy though, but I see where they're coming from. The more dedicated users who get perm accounts, the less paid accounts get bought, etc. Business is business unfortunately :\
i paid $150 for mine around three years ago? maybe? i'd have to look in my archives to make sure and i don't feel like doing that just now. in my case, $150 was worth it. i was on lj for a year (at least) by that point and i'm been writing here for five years. i believe that it was seven years time for it to pay itself off, and i'm coming close to my break even point. ;)
i love having the extra userpics and the storage space is nice. currently i have all my pics on flickr, but once my account there drops to nonpaid, i'll start using lj's picture storage.
but i think $175 is a bit much all at once. i think $125-150 is a more reasonable amount.
It's worth it if you plan on being here seven years. I bought mine in 2002, when they were $100 and paid accounts were $20/yr, so that was a five-year investment...not really that terribly much difference when you look at it that way.
I think it is worth it. But I recieved mine from my husband as an anniversary present.
it all depends on whether you plan to stay with LJ for four years. if you see yourself staying longer than four years, then it's worth it.
One year paid account = $25.00
One Year of extra user pics = $10.00
One year of extra storage space = $10.00
Total = $45 per year
Remember everything LJ offers gets thrown in free with a permanent account and most likely any future paid add on will also be free.
The above is what you you would pay if you paid it yearly.
nope, not worth it IMO.
who knows what might happen in the future!
with the economy the way it is, people are going to start doing away with luxuries (ie. internet), so it would really suck to buy a permanent account and then not have internet or whatever else might happen...
