|Expanding collapsed comment threads
||[Dec. 12th, 2007|08:01 pm]
Hi guys! We have a new experimental feature that is something a lot of people have been asking for: collapsed comment thread expansion!
This feature is in testing stages, which means that it's still in active development. It was created by our friends over at LJ in Moscow, and we'd love your feedback on it. Here's what you should know:
Again, we'd love your feedback on this feature. Let us know if you run into bugs and if you have any suggestions for how it should work. Thanks! :)
- It's currently only available on entry pages using the Expressive, Expressive Winter, or Mixit S2 layouts. We do plan to expand it to other layouts (and the unstyled, site schemed entry page) once the kinks have been worked out. We also plan to make it available for use in custom layouts.
- Paid users can use the feature on any journal using one of these layouts. Additionally, a user of any account level can use the feature on a Paid journal using one of these layouts. So it works if either the viewer or the journal being viewed is a Paid account.
- To expand a thread, click the link labeled "Expand" next to comments in collapsed threads. This will expand that comment and all comments under it in the thread so that you can read these comments without going to a separate page.
- There is a known issue that causes the "Expand" links to not work when viewing a journal with the ?style=mine argument (it will show the loading wheel forever and not expand anything). We hope to have this fixed by next week.
If I am an unpaid member but I am reading a paid community, will "Expand" be available to me?
As long as the paid community is using a style that has the "Expand" feature, yes.

I don't know who I should adress my request which is why I replied to this ljstaff latest entry.
See, someone (let's call this person my "Secret Santa", kinda) offered me a 6 months upgraded lj as a birthday present. Lemme tell you this was THE best birthday I ever had and I'm really enjoying it. Thing is, I asked my flist to -if they felt like it- lemme know who I should thank in person for this incredible gift. via lj, via mail, sms, snail mail. After a few weeks, all the replies I got were negative.
So, seems anonymous upgrader's not from my flist which got me even more puzzled.
I know you've got an anonymous policy and all, but I really like to know who to thank for this and (why not) return the upgrading favor in due (Bday or special) time. Could you at least gimmpe a hint? a mail I could send my thanks to?
thanks in advance for your reply.
It's currently only available on entry pages using the Expressive, Expressive Winter, or Mixit S2 layouts. We do plan to expand it to other layouts (and the unstyled, site schemed entry page) once the kinks have been worked out. We also plan to make it available for use in custom layouts.
So, if I'm using a custom layout layer based on Expressive, expanding won't work?
So what are the odds that this will become a full feature, and what kinds of changes can we expect (i.e., a global or default setting to expand all comments, rather than having to do it thread by thread)?
This is a great feature - one I've been waiting for since I started on LJ. Thank you so much!
It's annoying because if someone replies to a comment, the new comment is directly underneath the one they replied to, which is confusing.
I like it a lot, but would also like to see an "expand all" option someplace.
lj thread unfolder was still better, but because of the changes to the site, it no longer works.
i wish i could disable the comment expander so i can use the unfolder again. sucks.
Why are the comments expanding in such a stupid way with page reload while there's AJAX out there? Why are you so lazy you just can't do anything right without making some bullshit first?
I like it. I would like an option I could check in my preferences so that all threads I view are all expanded automatically, so I don't have to keep clicking to do that.
