Hi guys! We have a new experimental feature that is something a lot of people have been asking for: collapsed comment thread expansion!

This feature is in testing stages, which means that it's still in active development. It was created by our friends over at LJ in Moscow, and we'd love your feedback on it. Here's what you should know:

  1. It's currently only available on entry pages using the Expressive, Expressive Winter, or Mixit S2 layouts. We do plan to expand it to other layouts (and the unstyled, site schemed entry page) once the kinks have been worked out. We also plan to make it available for use in custom layouts.
  2. Paid users can use the feature on any journal using one of these layouts. Additionally, a user of any account level can use the feature on a Paid journal using one of these layouts. So it works if either the viewer or the journal being viewed is a Paid account.
  3. To expand a thread, click the link labeled "Expand" next to comments in collapsed threads. This will expand that comment and all comments under it in the thread so that you can read these comments without going to a separate page.
  4. There is a known issue that causes the "Expand" links to not work when viewing a journal with the ?style=mine argument (it will show the loading wheel forever and not expand anything). We hope to have this fixed by next week.
Again, we'd love your feedback on this feature. Let us know if you run into bugs and if you have any suggestions for how it should work. Thanks! :)

Why don't you have it working on this message so people can see for themselves how it works?

Good move. Thanks.

Hasn't hit my layout format yet but let me say it advance because going in and out of threads has always been a pet grumble of mine.

It would have been nice if this community had been set to one of those styles that the new feature works on, because then we could have seen this feature demonstrated. Unfortunately, I don't know anywhere that this feature can actually be seen working in action.

What took so long? Firefox has had an extension that does the expand collapsed comments thing for a while now.

I don't have anything constructive to say, just THANK YOU!! Definitely been longing for this for a long-ass time. Now I don't have to open ten tabs for one post!

I use Nebula, which I like a lot. I hope you incorporate this feature into that layout. It would be great to be able to read down a full thread of comments without having to jockey back and forth, forgetting where I read which comment.

Thanks!

probably shooting a dead horse with this one, but will this ever be available on Xcalibur & will that scheme ever be an available option again?

The first point (where they say that it will eventually work on the unstyled site scheme comment page) seems to imply that it will be available on XColibur in the future.

Also, XCol is still available here: http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?view=schemes

Sounds like a very useful feature, once it gets rolled out to all paid members.

it doesn't appear to be working for me. I am a paid user, using an expressive layout. If I go to my guestbook entry and scroll down and click on the expand link it jumps me back to the top of the page. If I scroll back down again, I see the wheel, but its frozen. I'm not using ?style-mine, just viewing the regular url here: http://lab-brat.livejournal.com/471617.html

You know what would be really fucking useful?

If the site didn't RANDOMLY LOG ME OUT WITHOUT WARNING so that I lose several full page and several hours worth of writing, due to changes in your interface.

I've had it, after Feb. I'm not re-upping for you guys any more, you don't
give a damn about your customers, you just make placating noises and hope that we'll be fooled.
