Hi guys! We have a new experimental feature that is something a lot of people have been asking for: collapsed comment thread expansion!

This feature is in testing stages, which means that it's still in active development. It was created by our friends over at LJ in Moscow, and we'd love your feedback on it. Here's what you should know:

  1. It's currently only available on entry pages using the Expressive, Expressive Winter, or Mixit S2 layouts. We do plan to expand it to other layouts (and the unstyled, site schemed entry page) once the kinks have been worked out. We also plan to make it available for use in custom layouts.
  2. Paid users can use the feature on any journal using one of these layouts. Additionally, a user of any account level can use the feature on a Paid journal using one of these layouts. So it works if either the viewer or the journal being viewed is a Paid account.
  3. To expand a thread, click the link labeled "Expand" next to comments in collapsed threads. This will expand that comment and all comments under it in the thread so that you can read these comments without going to a separate page.
  4. There is a known issue that causes the "Expand" links to not work when viewing a journal with the ?style=mine argument (it will show the loading wheel forever and not expand anything). We hope to have this fixed by next week.
Again, we'd love your feedback on this feature. Let us know if you run into bugs and if you have any suggestions for how it should work. Thanks! :)

Wonderful! I'm so glad you're making this change. The collapsed comments are a real pain to deal with.

But please make it available for everyone because the collapsed comments are an annoyance for everyone.

At least they can get them for free on paid journals! It's nice to be able to benefit your friends as well with your paid journal. :)

Awesome! Having tried it out on some test journal linked to around here, it looks like it'll be really useful!

Mostly looking forward to it being available on the site-schemed pages, since they're so much easier to look at then some peoples squished layouts :D

Sounds interesting, although I'm not sure I'll use it - a long page of non-collapsed commets can make my internet browser crash. Still, cool. :)

Is there any way to get the old customization page back? I don't know why you keep trying to fix things that aren't broken.

Totally agree. The new page is an absolute bitch to work with.

When are you going to provide a feature so that the threads aren't collapsed after fifty comments in the first place? It would be nice to have the choice.

If you guys keep being this awesome, I may be forced to stop saying bad things about you. What will I do with all my free time?!

OK don't take this the wrong way, but when this is rolled out to site-scheme pages my suggestion is this: please make the JavaScript link invisible if my browser doesn't support JavaScript. You can probably also make the page source slightly shorter if you call a function to print the expand button for each comment rather than outputting the code directly. (Also: <a href="#"> is lame.)

I'll keep using the Greasemonkey script for now — with luck it will carry on working.

Agreed. I love this feature, but I also love the extent to which LJ has been good about handling non-Javascript browsers. (The reply links doing the right thing vis-a-vis opening in the same window/going to the actual reply page, etc.)

I browse LJ a LOT with a non-Java-enabled browser (when checking my f'list quickly for things like last-minute dinner invitations), and it's one of the best-looking sites I've seen in Lynx (even w/o using the Lynx scheme; I think Dystopia looks even better in Lynx than the Lynx scheme) in a long time. (At least among sites with a lot of menus/features.)

Well, it's directly on the site, so you don't have to download anything or use a certain browser.

While the fact that It's only for paid users saddens me, I agree with other commenters: FINALLY!!!
