Hi guys! We have a new experimental feature that is something a lot of people have been asking for: collapsed comment thread expansion!

This feature is in testing stages, which means that it's still in active development. It was created by our friends over at LJ in Moscow, and we'd love your feedback on it. Here's what you should know:

  1. It's currently only available on entry pages using the Expressive, Expressive Winter, or Mixit S2 layouts. We do plan to expand it to other layouts (and the unstyled, site schemed entry page) once the kinks have been worked out. We also plan to make it available for use in custom layouts.
  2. Paid users can use the feature on any journal using one of these layouts. Additionally, a user of any account level can use the feature on a Paid journal using one of these layouts. So it works if either the viewer or the journal being viewed is a Paid account.
  3. To expand a thread, click the link labeled "Expand" next to comments in collapsed threads. This will expand that comment and all comments under it in the thread so that you can read these comments without going to a separate page.
  4. There is a known issue that causes the "Expand" links to not work when viewing a journal with the ?style=mine argument (it will show the loading wheel forever and not expand anything). We hope to have this fixed by next week.
Again, we'd love your feedback on this feature. Let us know if you run into bugs and if you have any suggestions for how it should work. Thanks! :)

Yes, basically, but it's something that we've been asking LJ for for a while now. Especially nice for those of us who, for one reason or another, don't use Firefox.

Hopefully it will be optional?

Optional, as in you don't have to click it if you don't want to. I'm not sure what you mean? (and no, not LJ anything, just curious about your question)

Can't wait to see that on other layouts, too. Is there an option to just expand all the comments on a post rather than just individual threads? That's what I usually want to do.

Ditto. As much as this is helpful, it's still tantamount to clicking on "thread" for every collapsed comment. It does save the hassle of multiple tabs/windows, but it's still annoying. I would like to have the option to expand all comments, always. I tried the greasemonkey thing and it never worked for me, so it would be great if LJ did this.

haven't used this feature yet, but I am very excited to hear about it. It was so annoying to read comments on a popular post

I really like it in theory. I'm excited to see how it works out.

Cool. Can we have a link to a comments page that demonstrates this feature? As someone mentioned, there are Firefox addons that do this, but this is probably something that can be done better on the server side. (unlike Snap.)

Someone posted this on the releases community, so I'm sure they won't mind it posted here as well.

Oh lord. This would be SO HELPFUL!

I am so sick of having to go through nested comments.

This doesn't effect me so much as some concerns that someone on my friends-list has brought to me.

Apparently know you can't make custom lists for who you want to post a specific entry too? What's going on? How can this be fixed?

Thanks!

I haven't noticed anything, and just created three dummy ones to make sure. But I'm a paid account, though I'm pretty sure that should have nothing to do with it.

YAY.

I tried the Greasemonkey extension, but it really killed the load-time on pages that had lots of threads. I just tested this on a big entry and it worked great. :D

Hmmm...

I'll have to play with it before I pass judgment, but IAWTC that isn't this what the thread button is for? Unless it makes the thread expand quicker, I don't see the point.

The difference is it loads in the same page now, instead of opening a new page. Especially nice if it's only one comment that's nested.
