You guys really need to come clean with what you plan for the TOS changes and policies to be implemented before you try to convince people to invest with permanent accounts that they may not be able to use as they wish.

Also? The donation thing? Did you all happen to get that idea from fandom_gives? They started it over two weeks ago... and all the money goes to the charities, none to Six Apart.

Well said, until they let us know about the TOS, what's the point?

Yes, because LiveJournal has done an absolutely stellar job in the past few months that it's proven so obviously that it deserves even *more* of my money.

Whatever PR / Advertising team (maybe it's just one very sad and underfed monkey!!!) decided to launch this should be fired, I think they still have a significant amount of 'clean up' to do before trying to rip even more money from us.

Mena, are you having cash flow problems, or do you just feel like buying another car?

Who was stupid enough to say "Sure let's go through this permanent account sale because there is no way anyone is going to remember about the strikethrough fiasco so soon after it happened!"?

Had you done this a month or two ago, I would have considered it in my financial interests to buy a permanent account. But now? I'm not even renewing my paid account when it runs out in November.

Seriously, though, timing?

Don't do it.

When I bought my permanent account, things were different. There were no ads on Livejournal ("no ads ever" was one of its appeals), and LJ had shown itself to be a strong proponent of free speech. Even if the ads and suspensions don't particularly bother you, consider that they are a sign that Six Apart will happily change anything it wants to change. You can't rely on anything, which makes a permanent account a risky investment.

Re: Don't do it.

Haha, oh the good ol' days of yore no ads. *sigh*

Good point.

Like everyone else said: timing. Maybe by Christmas this might've blown over if you added some shiny incentives to get us to fork over $150. And I respect that you guys kept your word for those who were really excited about the sale coming up in June. But... seriously. It's a slap in the face for the rest of us who've seen so little progress in resolving this mess.

The main group of people who would consider Perm accounts are Paid users. The vast majority of those people are involved in fandom, and/or were affected in some way by Strikefest '07. (At least 2500, given the polls at fandompays, and that's not even touching fandom_counts.) You alienated pretty much your entire marketbase. Way to go.

I'm adding my name to the "lolz r u srsly?" camp. My decision to not get a permanent account is based on a number of reasons, but this whole mess was the closing point. Had this not happened, I'd still feel a sense of community, home, and loyalty to LJ. I'd be in the "omg i want one!!!1" camp, viciously debating the pros and cons and staring at my online bank account for a while.

But I don't feel loyalty to LJ anymore, and what should have been a strong internal debate has descended into an, "Ehhh, no."

So instead, I'm going to donate with fandom_gives, whether or not it's officially "ended." More than the $25 6A would donate to a charity of my choice if I jump in quick.

By the way, what's up with that? "We're selling all week, but if you don't buy within the first 36 hours, you miss your chance to help out a charity." Shouldn't it be all perm accounts, regardless of when they're purchased? I mean, that comes off pretty dickish. This is charity. For many organizations LJ has duly offended and/or encroached upon what they stand for. It's not some one-day-only sale.

Pretend you give a shit a little better. Please.

Alas, Six Apart isn't going away. Brad sold LJ to 6A (it wasn't a merger, really) because it had become too big for him to manage. He didn't have the time or server space for it anymore. I think Brad's said he was contemplating shutting LJ down altogether since it was eating his life, and that selling it was the only other option. He turned down some Very Big Money from Very Big Companies to sell to 6A instead because they seemed to be the "least evil" of the bunch.

I think 6A is still are "less evil" than lots of other internet companies. The problem is, they're out to make money. They don't love LJ in particular, they love what return they can get on their investment. Still, they're smart enough to not want to kill the goose that lays the golden egg. But I think they thought they were buying something like MySpace for teenage girls. 6A still gets surprised about the nature of LJ.

I agree with you that some sort of reimbursement is due to paid/perm journals that were reinstated because they were wrongfully deleted, perhaps an extra few days added to their accounts. LJ doesn't legally owe it, but it would the right thing to do.

I do think that buying paid and permanent accounts is the best way to keep advertisers' influences out of LJ. If we want 6A to pay more attention to the users than to nutjobs who try to scare away the advertisers, then we need to show them our money.

I would love to have a paid account if I had the money. So tell me, would any of my current paid account go towards the purchase of a Permanent Account? I have approximately 1 1/2 years on my account that is paid for.

Nope. Paid accounts are neither transferable nor refundable. Cool, huh? :D At least this is mentioned in their TOS.

Funny how this comes right after the account suspension fiasco.

Are you sure we're gonna want you forever?

oh wow.

it's like you didn't even bother thinking about how your paying customers would take this.

or does that not matter anymore?

Someone came up with this back during the fiasco, and it'd be nice to see more people signing up -- I'm curious how many, like me, were genuinely considering forking over the cash before the slap in the face regarding just how low the users (paying or otherwise) feature in 6A's list of priorities.

Hah, not bloody likely. In fact chances are I'll be letting my paid account lapse when renewal time comes around.
