Changing Privacy on Posts en Masse [Mar. 7th, 2007|02:11 pm]

Ever since I started working for LJ it seems that paid users have been asking for the ability to change the privacy of old posts en masse. Well, the brand new Edit Journal Privacy page allows Paid users to do just that. You can change a bunch of posts from one basic privacy level to another.

Here's how it works:

  1. Choose a Timeframe. You can select all posts or a range of posts between two specific dates.
  2. Choose the privacy level to change posts from, and the new privacy level they should become.
  3. Click "Update Entries" and you will get a page showing how many posts match your criteria.
  4. Once you've confirmed your settings, you click "Yes, Update these Posts". Your password might be required.
  5. We'll send you an email when your entries have been updated. The final step doesn't tell you when the changes are complete, because it may take several seconds, or occasionally even longer.

Things to note:

-- Right now this tool only supports switching from and to the basic privacy levels (public, friends only or private). Any changes you make will not apply to posts that are set to a custom friends group (the tool will just skip over those posts).
-- There is no "undo" button for these actions. If you change the privacy level on one or more of your posts by mistake, you'll have to go back in and change them to their desired privacy level.
-- We have two simple security measures in place:
  • Passwords are required when making posts more public. If someone gained access to your computer or hijacked your login session, they would only be able to use this tool if they also had your password. Make sure you keep your passwords secure and hard to crack.
  • Email notifications are sent each time this tool is used. This means you will always know if someone, you or someone else, used this tool to make changes to posts, and roughly what those changes were.

Hope you like it!

I think that most people who have been around for a few years, and wanted to do this, have already done it the long and painful way. Still, this will save time for hundreds of future paid users, so thank you.

That's awesome!

One thing that would make it even more awesome in the future is if you can do it by tag as well as by date range.

Sweet mother of PHP thank you :). I don't use this option yet, but if I ever decided to go friends-only this'll save me an inordinate amount of time. Grazie!

Yay! There is plenty of stuff that I wouldn't mind hiding now that LJ is so popular and I'm all scared that RL friends will swoop in like hungry vultures and read all the bitchy stuff that I wrote about them circa 2005 ;)

But seriously, great option, being able to effectively hide the whole journal at a moments notice is something I find terrific, and something I will reserve for if people I hate ever find my journal >.>

I hope you are able to ignore all the miserable sods who are just desperately trying to find something to whine about. They obviously don't grasp that this whole LJ thing is still very much a work in progress and that you guys are still making the effort to make things as good as they can be.

I think LJ is just getting better all the time, so keep up the good work :)

*sends cake to you*

Thank you, this is brilliant. I've been slowly working on changing all my old entries, and now I've just changed 536 with a push of a button. :D ♥

Best paid feature ever. I had been intending to do this (manually) for a while, but when I found out it could be done automatically, I re-upped my paid account and did it the easy way.

Thank you!

This is very cool. Would it be difficult to let us switch to communities we moderate as well? For someone inheriting communities that finds a need to switch to locked or adult status on them, this would be invaluable. :)

You have GOT to be kidding me.

It took me FOREVER about a month ago to manually edit every single entry I've done to Friends Only, and made entries detailing how painful it was...

And now there's an en masse option.

Ah, such is life.

NOT FOR ROBOT.HUMAN ONLY FROM HUMAN

Re: NOT FOR ROBOT.HUMAN ONLY FROM HUMAN

Thank you so much for that info,
you are a godsend... I have been on here since 2001 and wanted to make all my old posts friends only and had been doing it manually little by little for the past 8 months... now it's almost instant! Awesome!

Hi,
I really do like this feature. I think it's an awesome idea. I read your comment that said that you would keep in mind needing to change public entries to a custom group. I too wish that could be implemented, because my mom recently found my journal. Well... someone told her about it. I don’t know who. It wasn't a friend of mine. She's been giving me no end of grief about it ever since, because it’s public mostly and I have some very personal family stuff in there. She’s destroyed my relationships with the rest of my family by reading bits of my journal to pretty much any one who will listen and my family has pretty much disowned me for this. I’d just like to be able to change all my entries to my custom friend’s group I’m writing under now, so that none of my family can see them anymore. I’d do it by hand, but I've got lots of entries and don’t have time to do them all by hand.
Take Care,
Dawnielle
