Changing Privacy on Posts en Masse [Mar. 7th, 2007|02:11 pm]

Ever since I started working for LJ it seems that paid users have been asking for the ability to change the privacy of old posts en masse. Well, the brand new Edit Journal Privacy page allows Paid users to do just that. You can change a bunch of posts from one basic privacy level to another.

Here's how it works:

  1. Choose a Timeframe. You can select all posts or a range of posts between two specific dates.
  2. Choose the privacy level to change posts from, and the new privacy level they should become.
  3. Click "Update Entries" and you will get a page showing how many posts match your criteria.
  4. Once you've confirmed your settings, you click "Yes, Update these Posts". Your password might be required.
  5. We'll send you an email when your entries have been updated. The final step doesn't tell you when the changes are complete, because it may take several seconds, or occasionally even longer.

Things to note:

-- Right now this tool only supports switching from and to the basic privacy levels (public, friends only or private). Any changes you make will not apply to posts that are set to a custom friends group (the tool will just skip over those posts).
-- There is no "undo" button for these actions. If you change the privacy level on one or more of your posts by mistake, you'll have to go back in and change them to their desired privacy level.
-- We have two simple security measures in place:
  • Passwords are required when making posts more public. If someone gained access to your computer or hijacked your login session, they would only be able to use this tool if they also had your password. Make sure you keep your passwords secure and hard to crack.
  • Email notifications are sent each time this tool is used. This means you will always know if someone, you or someone else, used this tool to make changes to posts, and roughly what those changes were.

Hope you like it!

Great. But now can you make it do custom permissions.

But really, this is very useful.

This is great!

When do you think we'll be able to use this for communities?

I can't say when this will be available for communities, they are a similar but different kettle of fish.

I'm a paid member, so it's really no big deal to me, but why are you shafting all of the other users ... I'm failing to see why this utility isn't available to all of your users.

LiveJournal is becoming more and more of an extreme disappointment.

OH!

One other thing.

Why are there ad banners on this site? I understand the concept of a plus account and sponsored communities, but what the hell?!

Since when were pretty colors and the trite concept of temporary clip-art on a profile page more important than interface and functionality?!?

Congratulations on continuing to evolve into the new crap version of MySpace!

Some of our features are only available to Paid users -- otherwise, there'd be no point in you guys paying, would there? :)

Most awesome update ever! I've been slowly trying to "friend" all the stupid crap I made public when I was young and dumb(er) and it's such an increadibly slow process...

I still had over 1900 to do and now poof! It's done!

*kisses!*

Thank you for all the work that you've put into this feature! I can't tell you how much I appreciate this, since I don't really use many of the other paid features. (I'd happily sacrifice phone-posting for more icons. XD) I'm sure that the number of stalking complaints are going to decrease, at least for a little while. ^_~

My only question is whether or not there are plans to make this available for paid communities as well? I understand that there's no Private option for communities. I can also understand the sensitivities to lowering privacy levels from Members to Public. However, I would think that an option to switch Public community entries to Members-only would be rather acceptable.

God, why couldn't you have introduced this function two days earlier?

I had to make my journal FO on Monday and lost all my tags doing it.

Sorry if this has been asked already, but I'm too tired to read all these pages. :(

Does this work for communities?

I know I already posted, but I have a sort of different feature request ...

Is there any hope of bumping up the number of friends groups you can have? I hit that 30 limit relatively often.

Yeah - almost all my posts have only one custom group because I just make more groups to get the peeps I want. Or what peeps I want to display (I have 3 pages open to LJ all the time, all to friend-filter pages, just to keep it sane). This is why a mass-edit-for-custom-groups would be less complex for my typical usage, though I can understand the excessive complexity for typical usage of other users.

That could be a disasterous option. You can do the equivalent for free (simple journal deletion, or they used to do optional suspensions) or for $15 you can wipe away your past with a simple journal rename. Make a new journal, transfer your name to it, and then delete whatever the old journal ends up being. A fresh start and, it's reversable if you change your mind within a reasonable time period.
