beta testing: toll-free voice posting [Jan. 26th, 2007|05:34 pm]
Paid Members

Earlier today we'd found that our voice post phone numbers weren't accepting calls. We're working with our provider to get the problem fixed as soon as we can. In the meantime, hachi rushed to finish setting up a different method of voice posting. We've managed to get a toll-free number for voice posts!

We've been working on this for a while, so while we weren't expecting to have this ready for today, we figured that we might as well try. In particular, it hasn't been stressed under load -- there may be some bumps along the way. So with that in mind, please feel free to set up voice posting if you haven't done so already, and then call 1-888-840-6189 to make a voice post from anywhere in the continental United States. :)

(Unfortunately, if you aren't in the US, you won't be able to use this number. We're still looking for a good international provider -- if you have one you'd like to suggest, please let us know!)

EDIT: This is now our primary voiceposting number -- the existing numbers have proven to be incredibly unreliable, so we're migrating to just this number. Update your contacts lists!

EDIT EDIT: We'll be working on getting alternate numbers, for all of you who've commented saying that this one doesn't work for you (for whatever reason). Keep an eye on news :)

0870 is national rate. If you happen to live in London then 020 would be cheaper from a landline, and will be cheaper from a mobile as well.
The Telediscount/similar option is local rate from a landline as 0844, but again a premium rate from a mobile.

As a student with only a mobile to use, I think I'll stick to dan_lane's number - but they are good options to know of if you are a landline user.

What she said, also if you have a contract mobile the 020 number (being a completely bog standard landline number) is included in your monthly minutes!

Short of providing an 0800 number (which would actually be more expensive from mobiles) I don't know what I can do to make it cheaper.

I keep bugging Brad to put the number on the official numbers page but it never happens.

"If you happen to live in London then 020 would be cheaper from a landline"

I should know the answer to this for certain, but are there actually phone companies that still make a distinction between local and national numbers?!

ntl does - at least, my parents phonebill shows that much.

I stand corrected — it's quite a while since I last looked at the cost of phone calls.

Actually I know 0870 is a rip-off — that's why I mentioned Telediscount in the same post — and I don't have a contract mobile so probably would always post from a land-line. But it does now seem that 020 is cheaper than 0844 even if you don't live in London. It wasn't ever thus.

I don't suppose you have access to LiveJournal's voice post internals, so does your service work by forwarding the call to one of the US voice post numbers?

It connects directly to the LJ server via SIP :)
