beta testing: toll-free voice posting [Jan. 26th, 2007|05:34 pm]
Paid Members

Earlier today we'd found that our voice post phone numbers weren't accepting calls. We're working with our provider to get the problem fixed as soon as we can. In the meantime, hachi rushed to finish setting up a different method of voice posting. We've managed to get a toll-free number for voice posts!

We've been working on this for a while, so while we weren't expecting to have this ready for today, we figured that we might as well try. In particular, it hasn't been stressed under load -- there may be some bumps along the way. So with that in mind, please feel free to set up voice posting if you haven't done so already, and then call 1-888-840-6189 to make a voice post from anywhere in the continental United States. :)

(Unfortunately, if you aren't in the US, you won't be able to use this number. We're still looking for a good international provider -- if you have one you'd like to suggest, please let us know!)

EDIT: This is now our primary voiceposting number -- the existing numbers have proven to be incredibly unreliable, so we're migrating to just this number. Update your contacts lists!

EDIT EDIT: We'll be working on getting alternate numbers, for all of you who've commented saying that this one doesn't work for you (for whatever reason). Keep an eye on news :)

As a Plus user (and able to make voice posts), it would have been nice to hear about this a little sooner. I never wanted to use this before because I didn't want to pay long distance... guess I shoulda checked the page before, but I never think to.

And although I live in the States, I definitely agree with everyone else about it being stupid to have a number that won't work outside the US.

Does the number work from payphones? IIRC, there's an option to prevent people from calling your 800 number from a payphone (If you allow people to call from payphones, you have to reimburse the payphone owner, so many numbers block it). I was wondering which way LJ had chosen to go with that.

Yeah it'd be nice if my post would you know, SHOW UP....is there lag or something? I made one voice post that I didn't like, but it came right up and I deleted it. Then I made another one and when I clicked the right buttons to save it on my phone, it said it was saved and I came back and NOPE, it didn't show up.

and yet another reason not to renew my paid account. at least with the other numbers, people outside the US could have voice posted (albeit paying long distance charges) but its no longer possible now. thanks!

I think those of us who don't reside in the US but are paid users should receive financial compensation. This is one of the benefits that we paid for, and for which representation was made when fees were paid.

Taking this service away constitutes misrepresentation and breach of contract. Free users don't really have a leg to stand on legally, but those of us who paid sure do.

Hmmm. Do I smell a class action lawsuit?

I agree; there should be some kind of compensation for paid users who are not in the USA. I understand that LJ had the original voice post numbers pulled out from under them, but that doesn't excuse the fact that we are paying for a service we are not getting.

As for Canada specifically, a number of people have already mentioned Bell Canada, who do in fact service most of the country, and I know they have an existing partnership with Aliant, who service the Maritime provinces. I suspect they also have partnerships with other phone service providers like SaskTel et al. We don't call 'em Ma Bell for nothing. ;-)

Ok this totally sucks. Now I can't voicepost because I am in Canada! I was ok paying the long distance charges and this was a big reason I became a paid user. Why the change and why the lack of notification to those it really impacted! Sounds like crappy change management!!!!!

Please fix this! A credit would be nice too.

Now I never get to make a voice post using the scary laugh I have due to losing my voice. Oh the perfidy!

I'm slightly confused. I thought 800 numbers were toll free in North America. Have you tried calling it anyway to see if it works? Because that's pretty crappy if it's a toll free number with limitations.

Why don't you get a landline and top it with this service:

It seems like a good idea. That way United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam, and Saipan get toll free calling, if that's what you're going for, and there's also a set number for other International callers.

Also paying for something I'm not getting

Just a bump to add my voice to the need for this PAID service to work as intended... soon.

Don't count on it. They don't give a shit about anyone outside the US. I've been arguing with them since over a month on this.

I haven't read the comments,so if anyone has reccomended Telstra for Australia, don't. Optus would be a lot better.

Need Help?

I haven't actually tried the voice post thing yet but I was about to and started reading all these comments. I'm a telecom engineer so I design IVRs and the like everyday. So if the LJ crew needs any help getting this stuff working for all countries they are free to give me a shout.
