LiveJournal's new notifications system [Sep. 5th, 2006|03:02 pm]
Paid Members

Today we launched LiveJournal's new notifications system to Paid members.  The notifications system will soon be launching to all LJ users, but we wanted to give Paid account holders a chance to use it early.  (Permanent account holders already have been using it in a sneak preview, so you can hit them up for pointers!)

With the new system, you can set up notifications for all types of things including when someone adds you as a friend.  Go to the Manage Settings page to set your preferences.  Also look for the icon in profile pages and journals to track updates and changes.  Just check in to your Message Center to keep up to date on the LJ activity that's most important to you.

Paid and Permanent account holders have the most subscriptions available and also have the extra options to get notified when a user uploads a new userpic and when users add new comments to individual comment threads.  We'll also be expanding the types of subscriptions that are available only to Paid users over the coming months.  Visit the FAQ to find out the different limits and options for each account level.

Please feel free to spread the word to other Paid account holders you know.  The engineers are still working out bugs in this complex system, but if you find something you think we should know about please leave your feedback on this post in lj_releases.

Useful tool. I, like everyone else, don't see the point of tracking icon uploads, but the rest is good. Props, LJ!

I still hate Horizon.

This will be great to track threads that last longer than the first page of my friend's page! Thanks so much for this feature.

NO. NO NO NO NO NO. First FaceBook started abusing users' privacy, now Livejournal?? I don't want to have to delete this account, too! This is the lamest thing I've heard in awhile. Livejournal is supposed to be an escape; a place to vent/share/learn what-have-you, not a place to fear for your own privacy. LAAAAAAAAAAAME.

Are you on crack?

Your privacy is the highest concern here. This new feature does not make your private entries visible. What are you talking about?

My impression is that you can not only track all comments made to a specific post but all comments made by a particular person. If this is correct what happens when the person post to a post that you wouldn't normally have access to?

No, you can't track the latter -- you can only track comments to a specific post.

I would really like to have the option to disable this feature for individual posts. It just seems like a prudent idea. As others have said before me, that way everyone can be happy.

Others here might sneer at commenters like myself for being overly paranoid, but try to understand that not everyone has had a wank-free existence here at LJ. Sometimes no matter what you do, you'll run across certain LJ users (commonly known as "trolls") who can't seem to act decently towards others, and will jump on any little thing you say or do and ridicule it. If you've ever been a part of a close-knit community or fandom, you'll know there's practically no way of escaping or totally ignoring it when it happens to you. You have to admit, the potential for the abuse of this new feature is high in the hands of users like them.

So that's why we should be able to turn it off if we want to. It may seem like paranoia, but at least we should have the right to do that much.

any possibility that we can get that tracking icon with a transparent background like the other icons (memories, edit entry, edit tags)?

Is there any reason why we can't opt out of being tracked? At least for our own LJ?

I guess friends-lock and filters just became de rigeur. The advantage of the manual system is that someone has to put in the effort if they want to track you around LJ.

And, yes, I know that most people won't, but that's not the point here. The folks who do want to stalk will take advantage of this.

The folks who want to stalk are already doing it. They didn't need this feature to do anything.

Question: when I comment on someone else's post, will I still receive email notifications of their reply to me or will I need to track the whole thread to see if they respond? I didn't notice an option for this in the settings.

You'll still get replies without specifically tracking it. Eventually we'll add in a subscription to the list, something like, "notify me when someone replies to a comment I post", but that's still quite a ways away. For now, it should just automagically happen. :)

Is this new feature getting added to NAVIGATION STRIP?

Hi Krissy, ♥ your icon too

Are you guys going to add this new feature to the Nav Strip? That would be dandy and a half!

Awesome! I suggested the tracking idea awhile back; it's nice to see it implemented!

Will a link to the message center be added to my lj? Otherwise I'll never know how to find it without finding this post, and eventually it will be lost (as happened with the recent comments page).

since this feature was announced, i've been getting double-emails whenever someone responds to a comment i've left in a post of my own. as if it's sending one to inform me of a reply to my comment, and the other to inform me that a comment has been posted in my entry. wtf? it was not this way before. anyone else notice this?

Are there going to be changes to the message center, or is everyone happy with how it is?

After using it for a day, I'm finding that it's not as user-friendly as I had hoped for. It's hard to tell what entry is being followed, what comments responses are to, what thread you're reading, etc. You just see someone's username and the community, for example. Nothing is threaded or easy to follow, in my opinion. I'm a member of a message board that lets you keep track of the threads you subscribe to, and it's so much easier to follow.

On a similar note, I've been wondering whether there was any design consideration for why entry titles are not shown in the message center. Not worth the cost of looking up another table in the DB, or is it just something that was overlooked and might eventually be added in?
