LiveJournal's new notifications system [Sep. 5th, 2006|03:02 pm]
Paid Members

paidmembers

[ljkrissy]
Today we launched LiveJournal's new notifications system to Paid members.  The notifications system will soon be launching to all LJ users, but we wanted to give Paid account holders a chance to use it early.  (Permanent account holders already have been using it in a sneak preview, so you can hit them up for pointers!)

With the new system, you can set up notifications for all types of things including when someone adds you as a friend.  Go to the Manage Settings page to set your preferences.  Also look for the icon in profile pages and journals to track updates and changes.  Just check in to your Message Center to keep up to date on the LJ activity that's most important to you.

Paid and Permanent account holders have the most subscriptions available and also have the extra options to get notified when a user uploads a new userpic and when users add new comments to individual comment threads.  We'll also be expanding the types of subscriptions that are available only to Paid users over the coming months.  Visit the FAQ to find out the different limits and options for each account level.

Please feel free to spread the word to other Paid account holders you know.  The engineers are still working out bugs in this complex system, but if you find something you think we should know about please leave your feedback on this post in lj_releases.

i really can't understand why we need a stalk feature on LJ, i can see so many ways this will be abused. at least there should be a way for people to block people from tracking them. i know i for one don't feel comfortable with anyone being able to "track" my ever post and comment. there is no need for this.

They can only track what they'd normally be able to see. If you don't want the whole world seeing something, you shouldn't be posting it publically.

This does seem to be a useful feature for keeping up with communities and one's f-list. However, I predict a rise in the number of f-locked LJs as word gets around about it.

ESN warms the cockles of my cold, black heart.

(Yes, there's an "l" in there.)

And we're going to be adding a "notify me when anyone comments in [community I maintain]" sort of subscription in the future! :)

Love it! Been waiting for this forever!

A few suggestions:

-- I love that the LJ header has a Messages link that shows how many messages you have waiting (keeps you from having to keep checking), and would love if this were added to the Navigation Strip too.

-- The option to set an "expiry" for a given subscription. E.g. Notify me if this subscription thread goes unmodified for 1 week or 1 month or 6 months or 1 year. Some users might even like it if they could set the subscription notice to automatically be deleted if inactive for a given period of time. (I'd rather just be notified.)

-- Alternatively to that, if there were simply a thing next to each subscription on the Manage Message Settings page that said "this thread last added to on xx/xx/xx date, that would be sufficient to allow the user to more quickly and easily make the decision about deleting a given subscription or not.

I second the request for those details.

MIxed about this. Looks quite cool, but if you ever do a "who is getting notifications about your updates/icons etc" you'll find that everyone stops using it. If for whatever reason I was going to track someone using this I probably wouldn't if I knew that they could see I was tracking them, making the entire thing redundant. I guess I'd just feel uncomfortable, even if it was totally innocent.
Does this system alert you of journal updates that you wouldn't normally be able to see, ie if I select "notify me of updates" on someone's journal who is not on my friends list, will I get an email if they make a friends only post. Or would I get an email if the person is a friend, but use a custom filter that I'm not able to view?

According to the replies from the staff to previous comments in this entry, the answer to all of the above is "no." That works for me.

The notifications are the BEST THING EVER. This is so awesome; I know from other sites that do it, that it's amazingly good for keeping track of stuff. AHHHH I have to find stuff to pin! *rushes off*

Great, now I'm not getting e-mail notifications for some reason. I've always gotten them, and I checked and it is selected under the new notification system.

Same here -- I can receive copies of comments that I leave (no matter which journal I leave them in) and replies to comments I've left in other people's journals, but, despite having the "Someone comments in my journal, on any post" option selected in Message Settings, I just noticed that someone left a comment on my latest journal entry... and there's no accompanying email.

This is reasonably fantastic.

Now, if I can just get something that will unthread when it thinks there are too many on the page, so I can just read the darn things without making hundreds of clicks and page loads, my life will be complete. :)

Yeah, what's that about. Most people are on broadband now so it should just do it. Or at least be an option in settings, or definable in your style settings. I can force ym style when looking at other people's but I can't make it expand threads automagically.

Ugh. Can I turn this feature off, please?

I really just don't see the point, other than for the shits and giggles of stalkers who have too much time on their hands. (And yes, this is different than the current form of LJ stalking - hitting 'refresh' over and over - this is automated stalking, which strikes me as creepier and much more annoying.) Thank god I haven't started getting the double comments I'm hearing about, but I trust it's only a matter of time. Really, really what I don't need in my inbox, thanks.

Want to be really helpful? I'd love a feature that allows me to edit my comments. *That* I would celebrate greatly.

You've enabled stalking?

Very well thought out considering fairly recent history involving livejournal, stalking and murderers?

Great. If people weren't having privacy/stalking issues before I;m sure this will help matter dramatically.
Yeah.
Can we please have a way to turn this off? I should be in charge of my own journal. If I post a comment and then delete it, it should stay deleted and not show up in someone's inbox. I think this is a horrible idea.

Someone remind me again why LJ has to keep 'improving' itself?

Forgive me, but how is this different from the comment emails people already get, other than the fact that they may be able to catch comments you make to others, which they can already do in theory if they see you post them before you get them deleted.

I would suggest writing comments, re-reading them, and coming back 5 minutes later to decide if you should post them or not if people receiving your deleted comments is an inconvenience.

The icons have been added to personal and comm profiles, which is great.

However, I don't see them on feeds, which would be rather useful as people often have a tendancy to comment on the syndicated entries rather than the "real" ones, and pushpinning every individual feed entry is a bit tedious.

Ooh, good catch! We didn't add any "track all comments in this journal" options yet, besides the ability for a person to track their own. (We're going to be adding something like, "notify me when someone comments in my community" for maintainers, is the one that comes to mind.) We could do something for synfeeds, too -- there aren't really any "owners", so I can see a case for allowing people to blanket-subscribe to everything there. I'll make sure to bring this point up, since that's totally a case where this'd be very useful.
