LiveJournal's new notifications system [Sep. 5th, 2006|03:02 pm]
Paid Members

paidmembers

[ljkrissy]
Today we launched LiveJournal's new notifications system to Paid members.  The notifications system will soon be launching to all LJ users, but we wanted to give Paid account holders a chance to use it early.  (Permanent account holders already have been using it in a sneak preview, so you can hit them up for pointers!)

With the new system, you can set up notifications for all types of things including when someone adds you as a friend.  Go to the Manage Settings page to set your preferences.  Also look for the icon in profile pages and journals to track updates and changes.  Just check in to your Message Center to keep up to date on the LJ activity that's most important to you.

Paid and Permanent account holders have the most subscriptions available and also have the extra options to get notified when a user uploads a new userpic and when users add new comments to individual comment threads.  We'll also be expanding the types of subscriptions that are available only to Paid users over the coming months.  Visit the FAQ to find out the different limits and options for each account level.

Please feel free to spread the word to other Paid account holders you know.  The engineers are still working out bugs in this complex system, but if you find something you think we should know about please leave your feedback on this post in lj_releases.

I'm wondering if the journal owner/original poster type will know of someone's subscribed to them or not? And maybe for what?

Personally, I'm a pretty paranoid person, and it would be nice to know. :D;

Good point - notification of someone tagging you would be handy ...

"final, detecting lock-on ..."
"Thank-you, computer."

Awesome. Nifty feature at last :D I'm sure I'll use this a lot! And I second what someone else said, it'd be great to know when someone's updated their userinfo. Unless it was just for typos or something small, in which it'd be kind of annoying, but oh well >_>

Suggestion noted! (I'm keeping a running list of all the "hay it would be neat if" comments people are posting here. *g*)

Is there a way to get to the manage settings page and message center from the main menu?

This is the best idea ever. Now we won't have to constantly check a third-party website for friendings.

Just a quickie: If I check the "Notifications by e-mail" checkbox, it will be e-mailed to me as well as being left in my Message Center?

Your icon made me laugh out loud, frightening my roommate.

As for LJ Notifications... we'll see.

How is this related to the existing e-mail sent out when someone replies to one of your posts, or a comment you made? Is this eventually going to replace that? The FAQ is silent on this.

Yes, once we're confident in this new system (and we're still working the kinks out) we'll end up replacing the old system with this one, so that all your email options are consolidated onto one page. But that won't happen until we're 100% certain that we've ironed out any problems, inconsistencies, inadvertent mistakes, etc.

Also, does the emphasis on 'invite a friend' in the new site scheme, and the option to get a notification upon someone accepting your invitation, mean that LJ will be going back to the invitation system?

No plans for that to happen, no.
