LiveJournal's new notifications system [Sep. 5th, 2006|03:02 pm]
Paid Members

paidmembers

[ljkrissy]
Today we launched LiveJournal's new notifications system to Paid members.  The notifications system will soon be launching to all LJ users, but we wanted to give Paid account holders a chance to use it early.  (Permanent account holders already have been using it in a sneak preview, so you can hit them up for pointers!)

With the new system, you can set up notifications for all types of things including when someone adds you as a friend.  Go to the Manage Settings page to set your preferences.  Also look for the icon in profile pages and journals to track updates and changes.  Just check in to your Message Center to keep up to date on the LJ activity that's most important to you.

Paid and Permanent account holders have the most subscriptions available and also have the extra options to get notified when a user uploads a new userpic and when users add new comments to individual comment threads.  We'll also be expanding the types of subscriptions that are available only to Paid users over the coming months.  Visit the FAQ to find out the different limits and options for each account level.

Please feel free to spread the word to other Paid account holders you know.  The engineers are still working out bugs in this complex system, but if you find something you think we should know about please leave your feedback on this post in lj_releases.

This is different, in the sense that our visibility rules don't let you see things you can't already see. For example, you can't see when I post in *any* community, 'cause you can't track that as it is, already. But you *can* get notifications for anytime I post in my journal, since you can do that just by looking in my journal. (And, of course, subject to my individual security settings and so on.)

So it's kind of the same idea, but with a lot more rules in place to avoid the stalker/creepy feeling.

Good point. Although some of us have been mostly Friends-Only for much that reason, anyway ...

Hmm ... will this notification thingy notify people if I were to make a Friends-Only or Filtered post that they couldn't actually read? Enquiring minds want to know ...

Very nice. The ability to subscribe to a thread/entry without posting to it is one of the MB features I had hoped would be implemented on LJ. Glad it has been, and I look forward to even more developments on this front. *plays with new toy*

Oops! Give us a little bit of time to fix that -- we're going to add in options so you can customize the display (eg, pick an image or change the text of the link). We didn't want to do that quite yet, so that people who *can't* use this won't see the options in the customization area and get confused about what they do. Options should be available ... maybe in about two weeks or so.

Thank you, LJ for deleting my comment. So that's what my money for my paid journal goes for. Not being able to have a say with what happens with my LJ.

I repeat. The tracking button sucks. Thank you for allowing people not on f-list to stalk me. Gah.

but they can 'stalk' you anyway! I could click on your calender and see every time you post! I can click your user pics and see them all! It just takes the work out of lj 'stalking'

aww, damn, i was sure the pin thing in people's profiles is for tracking when people update their userinfo!! i actually liked that idea way more than the option of tracking when people upload new userpics... now i feel disappointed after finally checking it out. :<

still, nice job with the notofications for when people friend you! and the option of tracking certain threads in other users' journals - that one's really convenient, i was wishing for this sort of thing for years! :) goodie.
