We’ve just added a fun new feature for Paid and Permanent account holders: the userpic selector! To try it out, just hit the new “Browse” button next to your userpic dropdown on the Update Journal, Edit Entry and “Quick Reply” comment forms.
You can scroll through thumbnail previews of your userpics as well as search for them by keywords. This feature is an excellent tool for those of you who have a ton of userpics.
UPDATE: Some people have mentioned that they can't get the userpic selector to work when they're commenting on posts in communities. Please try reloading the page (SHIFT+Refresh, or clear your cache) to get the updated files, and try again.
Know what I'd like even more? Getting the userpic selector sorted alphabetically by keyword instead of by date of upload.
cooool.. finally something plus members don't get in on. :P
I would love to use this if it worked, but on my Windows XP Firefox, the loading screen just goes on forever and ever and ever... o_o
awesome! Now I can see which one I want to use!
Takes a little long to load, though.
Well, I like the idea of this, but count me in the crowd of XP/Firefox users who can't get it to load. (Boo, hiss!)
I look forward to it working correct!
Since I don't have anywhere near 100 icons I won't need this, but it seems like a useful tool for most people. I checked it out and found it annoying that when I clicked on the X to close the window, it doesn't close.
Nifty. I'm one of those people who sometimes has trouble keeping track of the icon keywords she's chosen, so being able to preview userpics comes in handy.
Out of curiosity, what decides which icon goes where? I can't make heads or tails out of it.
Hmm...too bad I know what all my pics are titled.
I think we should have a random selector! That would be great and it would have the potential for high amusement.
Not a bad concept, but the implementation leaves an enormous amount to be desired -- and it doesn't really add much that the "Picture to use" link (on the "Post a new comment" page) doesn't already do.
Specific problems with the userpic selector:
-- user should be able to move the userpic selector window but can't
-- user should be able to resize the userpic selector window but can't
-- it's incredibly slow
-- the userpics are in random order
-- if you switch windows to look at your original message (or anything else) the userpic selector window closes itself, then if you still want it, you have to reopen it (and wait again) for it to come back up.
-- if you accidentally, by force of habit, press command-W when you want to close the userpic selector window, the window containing your entire post or comment closes too! (I lost this comment twice for this reason before I figured out what was going on).
-- I expected that if I double clicked on the userpic I wanted, that that userpic would have been selected as the one for the post/comment in question and the selector window would have closed. Instead it takes a second click on another button. (This is the least important issue of all of these.)
[Perhaps some of these problems are specific to the platform etc. I'm using -- I don't know, but FYI I'm on a Mac PowerBook G4 running OS 10.3.9 and browsing in Safari 1.3.2 (v312.6)]
Overall, clicking on the "Picture to use" link you already provide which takes me right to my Userpic page is much better and more efficient. That window I can move, resize, switch to the background or foreground, search quickly using command-F, and close normally, and I can do so much, much more quickly than I can do with the new userpic selector window. You've basically reinvented that link, but with a less user-friendly interface. And the new userpic selector window doesn't really add anything that the "Picture to use" link doesn't already do (there's a Find function in any browser), and it does it more clumsily and with more problems. I'd rather you had just added the "Picture to use" link (that takes you to the Userpic page) before the pull-down menu to the "Update Journal" and "Edit Journal Entries" pages.
The one thing I like that is new and different about the userpic selector window is the ability to show smaller versions of the userpics, but the problems with it far outweighed that nice little tidbit.
If you were going to bother to come up with something new along these lines, what would have been really great would be if there were a way to just have each userpic appear next to its keywords in the "Picture to use:"/"Userpic" pull-down menu! That would be fabulous! It would speed up the process in a clean, simple, more useful way.
Sorry to be so critical, but I thought you should know, and I tried to make this as constructive as possible.
all this needs is a "why wasn't this also added to the normal reply form" and it'd be perfect!
not all of us use quick reply comments. not all of us like quick reply comments.
