Our thoughts and best wishes go out to all of our LiveJournal family affected by Hurricane Katrina. To help take one of the worries off the minds of our users in the affected areas, we've extended any paid accounts held by anyone who lives in the areas by one month, to prevent anyone from losing time during disruptions, outages, and other problems.

If you know of anyone in the affected areas who didn't receive an email from us this afternoon, please have them contact us at accounts@livejournal.com so we can help them out. Our system let us identify most of the accounts affected, but not all.

It's great what you do for this people, no question. But actually, why exactly this catastrophe? Because it was so big in the media? Because they are US citizens?
I don't want to complain that you do someting for this people, actually I am very proud LJ cares about such things and I feel very sorry for the victims of this Hurricane. But it somehow has a bitter sidetaste, that so much effort (and I mean in general, not on LJ alone) is done to raise money here... where everywhere in the world are wars and catastrophes nearly completely forgotten and ignored by the media.

Like I said. I don't want to critizise that you do something for these people. I just wonder, why them and not all others who need help.
(For example, I'd understand a 'this month we support this and this international charity' way better).

"also, a nice big "fuck off and die" to any paid users smart enough to not live below sea level."

Hey they could have stood by and done nothing, like so many others.

I'm not saying bow down and be grateful, but you don't have to be hateful either.

Because $2.50 worth of "paid LJ" time means so much to those who've lost their homes and are now living in another state and trying to put their lives back together.

Why not take ($2.50 * number of users in affected area) and donate it to an actual charity? Oh yeah, because that wouldn't be a cheap PR stunt.

I currently live in Gulfport , MS.. Katrina's SMASHED us to pieces. LJ helped keep my network of friends and co workers together.

A free month... I think its a wonderful gesture.

Very few major companies are doing ANYTHING at all to reduce the strain on us.
