I've found winamp plays it fine, and winamp is common and easy to get hold of o.O

Ah, see I don't have winamp. I have windows media or realplayer. I don't think either of those work, but I'll try winamp, thanks! :]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vorbis#Software

Has plugins for WMP and Quicktime. They say Real already does in current versions.

I use JetAudio. It'll play just about anything. :)

Yeah, well, I don't want to put winamp on my mac.

I wasn't saying you should. Though if winamp plays it, and you don't want to install winamp, there's really nobody to actually blame but... well, yourself really :)

Actually, I can blame lj. I have a paid account, and I believe lj should provide a phone post format that can be played by a stable player.

I have a paid account and believe that LJ should never have given up codes. What's your point.

Winamp IS stable. And as said above, there are plugins available to let windows media player play .ogg.

If the file format playing in winamp and WMP doesn't satisfy you, then the LJ team would be perfectly justified in laughing and telling you to shove your money where the sun don't shine.

Why is there always *one* that *has* to be difficult.

I agree also that they should not have given up codes. I'm also not going to put windows media player onto my computer. I got a mac to get away from god awful programs that don't mesh with operating systems well. I believe the lj team should try to please as many paying customers as possible. I'm actually not being difficult. I was just posting in agreement to someone else's comment that .ogg is not an ideal format. If anyone is being difficult, it's you.

... Pointing out that some of the most common, popular, and easily available programs can play or have the option of being adjusted to play .ogg is being difficult? Since when :P

The LJ team HAVE managed to please as many paying customers as possible. The .ogg format makes most people happy. They also have an option to use .wav just in case anybody wants to get arsey about it, which sucks for you because most of LJ's paying customers are happy with .ogg.

LJ have an obligation to please most of their customers. Not all of them, and they certainly don't have an obligation to go out of their way to make you happy. The LJ team have done a good job making everybody happy IMO.

Some people, like the person I replied to, just don't realise how easy it is to get a program that gets .ogg. Once they realise, they too are happy. People like you are in a very small minority.

(I managed to keep my hate of macs and computer snobs out of this! Go me!)

Once again, there is the option of .wav files for those poor souls who 'don't want to install winamp' *sniff*. Go forth and convert your friends to .wav instead of griping about a file format loads of people are happy with.

iTunes has a free plugin to play .ogg files too: http://members.optusnet.com.au/lbramsay/misc/itunes-ogg.html
