Why use Ogg Vorbis?
Why Choose Ogg...?

The short version: It's free, it's Free, it sounds better (subjective, I know), it's smaller, and it has a cool name. (Okay, I just threw that last one in there.)

It may sound better, but more people have access to media players which are mp3/wav compatible. It's just less user-friendly, I think. Also, I don't think the level of quality in an Ogg file wouldn't be appealing enough to offset the fact that it's annoying to find a program to play the file.

I've found winamp plays it fine, and winamp is common and easy to get hold of o.O

That's why they allow people to chose whether they want to record phone posts in ogg or wav. Of course, if your friend picks ogg and you can't play that, you're out of luck.

There is another factor, explained here:
We offer your phone posts as .ogg files because it doesn't cost us extra to do so.

If more people started using software that handled Ogg, then it'd become more popular.

Maybe it sounds better. But dude. This isn't a recording studio. The input device is a phone.

Licensing fees for doing commercial mp3 encoding, which we would fall under, are very expensive.
