Paid Time Reimbursement [Jun. 30th, 2004|05:58 pm]
Paid Members

paidmembers

[jproulx]
In light of the rough periods we've experienced during the past couple of weeks, outgrowing our network topology & being attacked in a Distributed Denial of Service, we thought it only fair to give back some of your paid time.

Those of you who had a paid account during the month of June are eligible for an instant 2 weeks of free service, even if your paid account has since expired. Alternatively, if you have plans to purchase 6 or 12 months of service during the next week, you're eligible to receive 2 additional months of service for free. Both offers can be found for the next 7 days on the Paid Time Reimbursement page, and they apply to any eligible account you manage (communities, etc).

We apologize for the recently spotty service, but as always we're working hard to overcome these challenges.

We'd like to clarify that the 2 month option is only available for payments that have been fully processed, so it can take a while for the reimbursement page to update with the proper option. If you only see the 2 week option on the reimbursement page, either refresh the page or wait until your payment has totally cleared (Our credit card processing should be instant, but PayPal payments can sometimes take hours to clear).

Note: We're still running into some issues checking for accounts that have expired in the past month, and there are still some instances where people are getting "you are ineligible" errors. We're working as fast as we can to fix these problems, so please be patient. I'll update this post again when I have more information.

Update: We've made a couple of changes for eligibility checks, so if you were getting the "you are ineligible" error before you should try again.

My account was expiring as well, and I just purchsed 6 months on the 23rd, plus user pics... It'd be really nice if all paid members were allowed to get the two months extra time, not just the ones who renew after the problem is (mostly) fixed.

Dude, I think I actually echo that statement. It'd be nice if all paid members got the two month extra time myself.

Re: *echos Halomouse and Justhuman*

Now see, I didn't even know that the people who had free accounts were actually getting two months free paid time.

To me that doesn't make sense because they are using free services, the paid users are having to pay for their time and they are getting less of a re-imbursement than the people who have free accounts are getting.

Or maybe I'm confused and read this worng.

Re: *echos Halomouse and Justhuman*

Unless I'm really missing something well hidden here, I'm pretty sure that free users would only get two months if they become paid users by buying paid time right now, and that all paid users are eligible for the two months if they just go buy some more time than whatever they've already bought. What this adds up to is that all already-paid users get an automatic free two weeks which makes up for the time they already bought, and then on top of that all users get offered a sort of "buy two months, get two more months free" discount on time they purchase now.

The only users who really don't get reimbursed for anything are the ones with permanent accounts, which I'm one of. But I'm not complaining, because it's not like they could reasonably give me anything they're not doing their best to provide already anyway.

Re: *echos Halomouse and Justhuman*

Hmm. The wording on the reimbursement page is "new 6 or 12 month account". Now, my paid account expires in a week, and I'm planning to renew it tomorrow. It's not a new account...so do I still get the two months, or should I just grab my two weeks? (I'm holding off on it until the money's in one way or the other...)

Re: *echos Halomouse and Justhuman*

After you pay your money, hold off a few minutes longer waiting for the new "two month" button to show up, because based on what other comments here are saying, it looks like the button doesn't show up until you wait a few minutes and refresh the page or something.

Re: *echos Halomouse and Justhuman*

It doesn't have to be "new" -- sorry about that. If you go to the payment page now and buy a 6 month (or 12) account, you'll be able to come back to this page and get 2 free months tacked on.

Re: *echos Halomouse and Justhuman*

But see this really isn't affecting you, so it's more about the paid users who are actually having to purchase time because they aren't permanent accounts or early accounts.

And like I said in my comment I probably misunderstood something myself, sometimes my obvservations is a little off and I need a little bit of clarity. My whole point is that it shouldn't matter when you purchased your paid account time before or after the problems started occurring with LJ recently (because in the past six months LJ's been down quite a bit) or if you only purchased two months paid time as opposed to 6 or 12 months incraments--I think all of the paid user's should be able to either decide whether or not they want to use the two weeks free and call it cool or decide to buy more (whatever the icraments they choose without it being specified) and still get the bonus offer of two months free paid time.

un poco de logica

I'm pretty sure the reason all users aren't eligable for two months extra time is because not all users pay for an account in 6-12 month increments. It wouldn't be fair to give someone that paid $5 for a 2 month paid account the same 2 free months as someone that paid $25 months for a year paid account.

Even if you paid account time doesn't expire for 6 months, you could take advantage of this by paying in the next week, and getting your free 2 months.

Re: un poco de logica

Yes, it's only a little logic, but I use what I have. :-}

Perhaps I should have mentioned that I just paid in a six-month increment, as I usually do. And, I didn't really comment because it was important to me, I commented because of all the complaints I've seen and heard in the last two weeks. Six months ahead is all I ever plan, as my health isn't what it could be and it would be a waste to pay more and then never see the use of it. But, I do know a lot of people who would be mollified more than a little by that two months of paid time. Then, if they were happier, they wouldn't keep fussing and I'd not have to read how annoyed they were anymore. lol

Re: un poco de logica

But LJ is already being more generous than they need to be. The TOS states that they don't reimburse for downtime. And the site really has only been funky for about a week. So giving two weeks of paid time is fair. Giving two months, provided you pay for more time, is super.

Considering that you paid for more time just a few days ago, I really do think you should be eligible for extra paid time too. It should be anyone that's paid recently, or who pays in the next week.

But to give every paid LJer an extra 2 months would be losing a lot of potential revenue, which the site needs to maintain itself.

Be well

Re: un poco de logica

I see where you're coming from, I just think it would make the people who pay for the use of the site feel better about the lost time. Probably half of the paid users will never even notice this offer, so it's doubtful every one of them would try to claim whatever free time LJ offers in the week that's being allowed to claim it. I think how the invite code exchanges went is a good example of that; people still have codes they never used, even now.

Perhaps a good compromise might be for anyone who bought six months or more in a certain period of time to get the two months of extra time. That would cover the people who just purchased more despite the problems, and shouldn't put too much of a financial strain on LJ.
