This toy is back:

It uses all our new fast stuff this time. Hopefully it holds up longer than it did last time. :-)

The theory is that people with more interests in common with you will be more compatible, or something. Just because someone has one interest in common with you doesn't mean you'll have anything else in common with them, or that you'll find the person interesting. Trying to find people with many interests in common with you by choosing one interest and looking at each user who lists that would be a pain in the neck. The common interests tool narrows down the field.

It's similar to the popular with friends tool in that it's a friend finding tool. People my friends like are more likely to be interesting to me, too. People who have more interests in common with me are more likely to be interesting to me than someone with only one interest in common.

Did that make any sense?

I personally liked the common interests tool better than the popular with friends tool.

so... it analyzed all of the "click on an interest on yer interest list" pages and figured out the percentage of your interests were the same as theirs. something kinda like that. it sounds to me that itd put a lot of strain on the servers and that could be why they took it down (most likely reason too).

but, yes, i agree that itd be nifty to bring back. they just gotta make it practical for the hardware cuz its gotta do everything else too.

I'm not sure how it worked, but it didn't work efficiently enough, apparently. I'm not complaining for them to bring it back immediately or anything, I know they had good reasons for taking it down. It was nifty, but I'd rather have the site working most of the time than having it crash because of said niftiness. :)

Yep, except that it weighted uncommon interests more highly (don't know how, the algorithm was secret or something). So you'd come up with some people who shared a few odd interests with you, rather than just the usual "music, kissing, poetry, friends" etc. Very cool, and I hope they can bring it back soon.

Yeah, that was the second incarnation. The first one didn't take into account the popularity of the interests.
