This toy is back:

It uses all our new fast stuff this time. Hopefully it holds up longer than it did last time. :-)

Any chance of getting back the "you have most interests in common with" listing? I found that most useful...

But this is a nice addition, thanks. I appreciate all the hard work you do on LJ.

I too miss that feature. It's great for finding other users who have similar interests.

Most of the people on my friends list I have because of that feature.

Hopefully LJ will read this and add the feature back.

if you click on an interest on yer interest list, for example the screen savers, it will give you a list of communities and users that/who share that interest.

im not understanding why this is such an issue. could you explain it to me?

Think they're referring to Similar Interest Matching, which looks at all interests, not just one.

And I agree, I'd like to see that back. 'Twas a fun toy.

The theory is that people with more interests in common with you will be more compatible, or something. Just because someone has one interest in common with you doesn't mean you'll have anything else in common with them, or that you'll find the person interesting. Trying to find people with many interests in common with you by choosing one interest and looking at each user who lists that would be a pain in the neck. The common interests tool narrows down the field.

It's similar to the popular with friends tool in that it's a friend finding tool. People my friends like are more likely to be interesting to me, too. People who have more interests in common with me are more likely to be interesting to me than someone with only one interest in common.

Did that make any sense?

I personally liked the common interests tool better than the popular with friends tool.

so... it analyzed all of the "click on an interest on yer interest list" pages and figured out the percentage of your interests were the same as theirs. something kinda like that. it sounds to me that itd put a lot of strain on the servers and that could be why they took it down (most likely reason too).

but, yes, i agree that itd be nifty to bring back. they just gotta make it practical for the hardware cuz its gotta do everything else too.

There used to be a tool that would compare your interests to the interests of all other LJ users and would show you the other users which you shared the most interests with.

Say I had "the screen savers" "computers" "linux" and "networking" as my interests. It would search other users, and then tell me that LJ user "x" matches "x" percentage of your interests.

It was a very nice feature, but was taken away because at the time it was too much of a server burden.

Yeah, I miss that too. Why was it taken down?

Apparently it took up too much of the LJ server resources.

that was a while ago

and now that the lj server infrastructure has been uber-optimized there should be a way to re-introduce this functionality ... no?

I, too, would love to have that feature back. It was extremely cool, an I met some great people through that. Bring it back, Brad!
