[bradfitz]
We've gone from 17 to 455 phone numbers available. They're all east coast still, but we're working on others.

http://www.livejournal.com/phonepost/numbers.bml

States covered: Connecticut | Delaware | Dist. of Columbia | Florida | Georgia | Maine | Maryland | Massachusetts | New Hampshire | New Jersey | New York | Pennsylvania | Rhode Island | Vermont | Virginia

Mad props to the coolest phone company I've had the pleasure of working with:

http://www.voicepulse.com/

Everybody should get a VoIP phone from them because they're cool. (I'm drooling at their "Filters" functionality....) Unfortunately I'm in Portland, OR, outside of their coverage area, so I can't get their service.

Anyway, we're working on numbers in other parts of the world and the states. If you work at a phone company that can setup trunk numbers in your region to a VoIP/SIP/IAX connection on our end, get in contact with me at brad@danga.com .

Enjoy!

Just out of curiosity, you have almost the whole state of Florida covered at least the major cities, except for the Tampa Bay area? You wouldn't happen to be a Raiders fan and still mad about the Super Bowl would ya? :)

Phone companies in Canada

While Bell is the main one, and if you want to be sure of your stability, they'd be the ones to go with. They might whack up a deal with you, though. You could always give it a go.

However, there are other companies offering (at least) long distance service (some local too) that you may want to try: Sprint, Telus, London Telecom, Primus. THere are others, but I don't know them offhand.

bell.ca

sprint.ca

londontelecom.com

primus.ca

telus.ca

Re: Phone companies in Canada

Phone companies don't typically offer voice-to-VoIP conversion, though -- it's usually a small-to-medium consumer VoIP startup that will take local calls and relay them over the Internet to Seattle.

I just got my paid account a week ago and I am so amazed with all these new features. Thanks so much, my obsession with Livejournal is increasing daily.

And I see my area code! Holy Jesus, the possibilities.

Can't hear the phone posts

Sorry if this was covered elsewhere, I looked for a long time.

I can't hear the phone posts. I've tried downloading Winamp and Zinf (sp?) but neither worked. It says it can't find STUDIO.exe. Help.

this has probably been asked, but in case it hasn't, are you guys going overseas with this?

It's been asked quite a few times, and I believe the answer is if/when it's feasible. However, that may very well be many years down the road.

It depends upon having a VoIP company in your country that is willing/able to do business with a Seattle, WA, US company, at a price LJ can afford, taking any taxes that may be imposed on the connection into account. I'm fairly certain it also depends upon being able to get some consulting time from a lawyer in your country to do a quick review of the pertaining laws (which could, depending on the results of the review, postpone it for a while until laws change.) It also depends upon having enough paid users there to make it worthwhile, although that shouldn't be a major hurdle for most countries.

Note that this is a general answer, and not specific to the Philippines or any other specific country.

Why there isn't a phone number near you.

It might cut down on the frustration level for you all to know that the location of the numbers that Voicepulse provides is beyond LJ's control. This is because a special kind of link between the phone system and the internet needs to be set up and that so far these are the only places that Voicepulse has done so.

I think this has probably already been asked but...

why no 800 number, a la Audblog? Wouldn't it be a lot cheaper?

For whom? If it were a toll-free number for us, LJ would be paying the bill. Now, if they wanted to charge extra for phone posting, that'd be fine, but in the meantime, not so cool for them.
