Similar interest matching is back [Mar. 31st, 2002|04:02 pm]

I just wanted to let everyone know that similar interest matching is back up. This feature allows you to enter any user name to receive a list of users with similar interests. The list is sorted by "Magic Index," a super secret formula that we would have to kill you if we told you about.

This is only a paid members feature for now. Enjoy!

Well I know every time someone posts a comment to say "thanks" you get an email and your inbox ends up getting flooded. So even though I'm very appreciative, I'm not going to bother posting a comment just to say thanks. Oh wait, damnit! Ah well, thanks anyway.

Very cool, but the magic number thing is still a bit confusing.

Good work, nonetheless.

Then don't look at the numbers.
The number is magic and doesn't represent anything countable.

So, if we crack the magic number ourselves somehow (and heck, I have tomorrow off and nothing better to do), would we get some sort of prize? Or just, you know, die for possessing the knowledge?

here's a great place to start on the cracking...

i don't know how closely their actual formula appears to what has been posted here...but it might give you ideas on where to start hacking their formula...

Idea: What if there was an option to exclude those on your friends list? I'd love that, as most of the matches are on my friends list, and thus I can't find new people.

That would be difficult, since as far as I'm aware, the Magic Number is related to the number of friends you have in common with people, as well as the interests.

*hopes that doesn't get him killed, or worse, corrected*

Bah.. such a cool feature and all I can think to say about it is that it's "nifty-keen." Oh well, keep up the good work LJ admin guys. You guys rock.

As far as I can tell, the magic number is based on what interests you have in common with that person and *only* that person. For example if you have "giant penguins" as an interest and only one other person has giant penguins as an interest, that will rank higher than someone with, say, "music" as an interest in common. Does this make sense? Because on the list it generated for me, the two people on the top of the list had "seeing eye dogs" or "evil rabbits" as the only shared interest, but I was the *only* other person who shared that interest in all of LJ with them. I think that's how it works, at least...
