Fast servers change [Aug. 27th, 2001|01:34 am]
Paid Members

I've made some changes to when the fast servers are used. Before you had to be logged in, then anywhere you went was fast.

However, your username.livejournal.com domain was still slow to people visiting your journal. Now it's fast. So when you make links to your journal in other places, use your username.livejournal.com address, not /users/username/. The exception is friends pages... those aren't fast on username.livejournal.com URLs, unless you're logged in.

Also changed--- /login.bml is fast, so if slow servers are overloaded, jump right to www.livejournal.com/login.bml and login.

Oh, also --- customview.cgi is always fast now too, so if you embed your journals in your website, your webserver doesn't have to be "logged in".

This is probably a goofy request, but I'd like to see a little bit more detail on status.livejournal.com than "Things are broken. We're working on it." For example, just something like "2:00am: the database servers are really slow. We're implementing new code right now. Update, 7:00am: Oops, we found some bugs. We can't back out now, so it might be a few hours before things are fixed. Update, 11:00am: We've put a spare development server into service as a production server; maybe the extra machine will fix things. Update, 11:30am: We think we have all of the bugs fixed, but free accounts might still be experiencing problems because <insert whatever reason here>."

That way we at least know things are progressing. It'd only take a minute or two to write stuff like that, and let's face it, LiveJournal is not so vital a service that we couldn't wait an extra minute for it to come back up!

More detail is always nice, and the status page is our friend! It helps us understand what you're going through, it makes you feel like you're keeping us involved, and we're not going to string you up because you've found a bug or anything. :)

Y'all are doing a great job, especially on a mostly volunteer (and, if not, an extremely low-paid) basis. Keep it up! And we still love you. *grin*

but I hate context switching :(

I did update the paid members' servers' 500 error message a few times during the night. I didn't timestamp it though.

Hmm, see, once I get an error message from the server, I stop checking it and only check the status page, because I figure you don't need any more strain on the production servers than exists already. I could start checking my actual page, though, if that's what you'd suggest.

Thanks for the reply!

my stupid DNS lost the status page. it'd worked fine from when it was 1st put up, but yesterday i kept getting that 'it's not a paid member so the address should be blah blah' message. damnitall. (and it works fine again now, of course. you're just toying with my mind, aren't you!!)

A suggestion (and if this should be transfered to the suggestions community, let me know - but it seemed applicable here):

I often use the lj_user tags to link to friends journals, but I notice that these point to the old /users/username address as opposed to the user.lj.com format. Can this be changed? Just from my quick thinking about it, it seems like a horrendous headache to implement (determining on the fly which <lj user="xxx"> tags point to which format), but it would help better utilize the features you've implemented.

Again, just a thought. If you want this thought shuttled over to suggestions, let me know.

I was just about to say that.... I can never keep track of who on my friends list has finally decided to pay up, so I wouldn't know which way to link anyhow.

Thanks for all the hard work. Now, to join my voice with that of the milling throng, GO SLEEP!

Thoughts on LJ:
It is very frustrating when you want to write something down, post it, and can not. Alternatively, when you do post and you get it posted six times. Many of us use this outlet as a form of recovery, fellowship, accountability, and just because it is fun. I admit, I was ready to start sending Brad Sucks memos out all weekend.

I think what dawned on me this morning was how quickly I was willing to throw in the towel. A journal of any type requires discipline. When you are using an open journal, it not only requires the discipline to set down and write it, but in many cases, the need to respond to all of our friends as well. We may never meet any of each other in person. Yet, we share with each other many things we dont share with the people who we see every day. It gives shy people a chance to be bold, lonely people a chance to relate, confused people a chance to get advice, and many other things that would require way too much space in my journal. I have gained so much from each one of my friends on here. You are people that I would probably have never met and yet, through this mode, we have learned to respect and care for each other.

I agree that things need to improve with LJ. I think they are trying very hard to do just that, (no one wants to be another failed .com). I am hoping that all my friends will wait it out a while longer because I would hate to loose any of you. Am I being selfish. YOU bet I am! Hey at least I admit it.

username.livejournal.com & Styles

You mentioned that the subdomain sites are faster...but can we use these embedded in other sites, so that we can apply styles?

You all kick ass!!

I have to say, after reading all the free users complaining about a service that they don't even pay for, something dawned on me. So I wipped out my credit card and bought a paid account.

If someone doesn't pay for the service, the service is not here. I use the service, so I should support it. So that is what I have done.

I really hope all these upgrades are not coming out of brad's pocket. That would make me ever so upset.

Keep up the good work guys, you guys deserve a couple cases of beer (at least) hmmm maybe I should run accross the border and buy you some =)

Hi there. I know this is an out of the blue question. I just sent an e-mail and I have not heard anything yet. I'm not rushing you guys but I did send a check for an early adopter in the mail.. about a week ago Thursday... its now Saturday. Please tell me if you got it. Because I know the mail can be slow.. And I know there has been problems with Live Journal. I'm just worried that it hasn't gotten to you.

Any Gamers?

I am in desperate need of funds. I do not want to do this, but I have no alternative. I would like to sell these in a lot, for a good price.. But if you see anything you want, I'm sure we can cut a deal. All my games are in brand new condition except the fact that the SNES games are older than shit. they are still in Great condition for their age. Every game works, and the CD Games have very minor to NO SCRATCHES. (Games that may have scratches will be anounced later) If it does not mention scratches there ARE NONE. Everything else in is Brand New condition. The Value of the lot is somewhere near $450 (Without adding items I have no Idea their worth) I have a set lot price in mind, but I'm taking the best offer (Obviously the closer to $450 the better :) ) Some of these games have been opened and NEVER played through.
I am in possesion of:
Final Fantasy Chronicals: FF 4 + CT (PSX)($20 value)
Final Fantasy Anthologies: FF 5 + 6 (PSX) ($20 Value) (Very minor scratches)
Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX) ($20 Value)
Final Fantasy VII (PSX)($20 Value)
Final Fantasy IX (PSX)($20 value)
Final Fantasy X (PS2) (Unknown Value) (May be Minor scratches)
Maximo: Ghosts to Glory (PS2) ($20 value)
Lunar: Silver Star Story (PSX)($60 Value)
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (PSX)($60 Value)
The Legend of Dragoon (Psx) ($20 Value)
Wild Arms 2 (PSX) ($20 Value)
Vandal Hearts (PSX) ($15 Value)(Minor scratches)
Castlevania: Symphony of The Night (PSX)($15-$20 Value)(Minor scratches)
Gameboy Advance (Aprox $30 value)
Super Mario Kart Super Circuit (GBA)(Unknown Value)
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages (GBC) (Unknown Value)
The Legend Of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons (GBC) (Unknown Value)
Poke'mon Yellow (GBC) (Unknown Value)
SNES ($30 value)
Castlevania 4, Killer Instinct, Mario All Stars (No world on cart), Chrono Trigger, Tiny Toons: Buster Busts Loose, Street Fighter. (All unknown Value except CT $50 + Castlevania 4 $10 value)
