We've made some additions and improvements to Notes!

The Notes feature has been added to two action-taking pages:
  • You can now add a Note directly on the Add a friend page - handy if you'd like to mark down where you met them or another name you know them by!
  • On the Ban and unban users page (under Account -> Privacy) you can now add a Note, including to a group of users all banned at the same time (so that next year you won't need to ask yourself "hey, why did I ban these guys?")

Other changes:
  • When you're viewing your existing Notes they're grayed out; click in a field to activate it to change the text (this page can be found from the header by using Profile -> Manage Notes)
  • Changes to editing:
    • When you're going to create a new Note but one already exists, you'll get a warning that you're editing an existing Note
    • You can now delete a note from the "Edit note" pop-up in the hover menu
    • You can now delete notes for multiple selected users on the Manage notes page
    • When you change Notes on "Ban|unban users" page, they can be edited and saved with "Save Changes" button

I didn't for a long time, but then I realized that I could add a note on a user who wasn't on my friends list (I know who all of the people on my friendslist are, so I didn't feel the need to make any notes).

For instance, I can see someone who had a great post somewhere and mark down "person who wrote about the dog and the sweet potatoes" - then, when I see them post in another community or make a comment, I know where I've seen them before.

How do you make notes on people who aren't on your friends list?

just mouseover on the info icon beside their name, as usual...

I turned the Hover feature off when it first became available, because having numerous random menus just appear and disappear when I'm going down a page can be quite the annoyance!

You can hover over their icon and add a note from that menu, use the Manage Notes page, or "add note" in their profile (under add/manage friend). That's all I know.

As was said in another reply, you can set a Note for someone by hovering over their userhead icon -- and to do be able to do this, you need to have activated the 'Hover Menu' option in your Display settings [http://www.livejournal.com/manage/settings/?cat=display].

(You may already have that turned on, in which case you can just ignore this comment. But just in case you didn't and were thinking 'um, is hovering supposed to *do* something?', I just wanted to clarify that you have to turn the hover feature on.)

Edited to clarify that besides the hover menu, you can also add a note to any user by using the Add Note button on the right side of the Profile page, in the column of little button/links.

Oh, I think I turned the Hover feature off when it first became available, because having numerous random menus just appear and disappear when I'm going down a page can be quite the annoyance!

But hey, I have the Add Note button even if I'm on Dystopia! Sweet! Thanks!

Just move your mouse cursor onto someone's userpic. There will be a small pop-up window with several options, one of which is `Ban user'.

You can also use this page -- http://www.livejournal.com/manage/banusers.bml -- which allows you to do the banning a little more easily than at the Admin Console. :)

Thanks but I don't see Notes field for users banned in communities (even paid ones)! I think in a comm it would be more useful than in personal journals. We have a few maintainters, and if one of them bans a user, the others may want to know why when they see the list.

Neat. Now I now a LOT more about notes - never saw the point of them before.

It's a little bit of niche feature, but could be very useful.

I have never had to ban anyone, or make secret notes on them.
I would much rather have a hit counter you could put on any page.

an oversight by livejournal - ?

this sounds like it's probably an oversight - and rectifiable by lj, if some maintainer convinces them of the usefulness of it.

would you say that communities created/maintained by non-paid members should also get notes, because they're useful and paid members use them, too - or that they shouldn't, because it gives a "paid members' perk" to any non-paid member, who opens a community? (though not to their own journal, of course)

I purchased extra userpictures and paid time this morning and have yet to recieve either...... I'm not pleased. This was a PayPal transfer & typically they are instant.... Can someone tell me what might be the deal here? I'm out $9 for nothing now. :(

It's not working, LJ

So many fancy bells and whistles, and they're nice (especially the anti spammer stuff). But at the same time I'm sure I'm not the only faithful member who's been left out in the cold.

I live below the poverty level, and I dont' have and can't get a credit card. Also, so many horror stories about paypal have scared me away from it. I can't afford to pay every month for my LJ services, and so I have to save up money and send it to a friend with a credit card to pay for me. I would be sending money orders right to you guys, but OH RIGHT, you made it so people can't do that anymore.

And then, after four years of scrimping and saving and doing without things to get the money for a permanent account... guess what, people, only LJ staff get those now!

I feel slapped in the face. I've been on LJ nearly since it started, and I've had my paid account for over five years. I don't intend on giving up on LJ unless I'm forced to, but it's getting harder and harder to stay with you guys.

I'm pretty sure nobody will see this, or if they will nobody will care enough to answer constructively. But I just had to state my thoughts on all your improvements.
