The directory search has been suffering lately because of both the hardware it's on, and its design.

We're going to be taking it down for a bit to move it somewhere else, on a little more impressive hardware. The larger issue of fixing its design so it scales better is being put off until we see how well it works on the new hardware.

We'll post again when it's back up.

there's something going around livejournal that is supposedly from the official livejournal staff, saying that for emergency purposes to post an entry and backdate it so that it's your first ever entry, and to mark it private... and to have your full name, address, date of birth, and phone numbers... that way if anything ever happens that lj abuse finds out about, you guys can contact people to help (like phone posts being interrupted by violence and the like) and then to post a note in your userinfo saying that you did it

is this a real thing? or should i go warn all my friends that its a fake?

oh way to go :(

so I'm confused...
Am I paying for service or am I supporting a service, like making a donation? I'd like to know what to expect as someone who's put in a couple hundred dollars to this site? I'm happy if it's a donation, at least then I won't be wondering why I'm paying for a service that just barely works.

Maybe I'm supporting the bandwitdh so that all these losers can scream I LOVE YOU BRAD YAYAYYAYAYAYYAYAYAYAYYA KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!! in the comments of these posts

Good job on fixing it though. :)

I just recently became a paying costumer of LJ, not because of the services, but because I like this place. :) In my feeling, all websites have their ups and downs, and I kow LJ are going through some issues with the servers and other things, but for the most part I think you guys are doing a great job. :) I keep telling my friends about LJ, because it's a fun place.
I never really used the directory, so I wouldn't even know it's down. lol

Comparing LJ to some of the other (and much more expensive) services I use, I'm amazed that it works as well as it does, and without ads, when less than 3% of its users help to support it. Look at (for example) fanfiction.net, if you want to see what livejournal could be like.

I mostly got a paid account because I wanted the extra icons, but it's also nice to be able to support a really worthwhile endeavour, and one that for the most part works well even if you don't support it.

All of you guys sure bitch a lot.
My paid account ran out and I won't renew it until Livejournal is no longer the SLOWEST WEBSITE ON LINE.
If you feel the same, do that same. Simple.

It's not slow for paid users. Their HTTP requests get first priority at the load balancer.

The major issue I have with the directory search is that you can only search for one interest at a time. IT doesn't allow you to search for "interest A and interest B".... so I wind up doing a search for one thing and digging through the results which takes for ever... even a "Search within results" would be helpful.

I've tried doing searches on it for the past two weeks, and it hasn't worked, so I'm glad to hear revisions are being made. It sucks too, because I got a paid account specifically so I could utilize the full potential of the search engine. :-(

directory search was the only reason I renewed my membership. now it doesn't work. it hasn't worked for a month, even longer if you get technical.

I have asked for a month worth of credit, but I am ignored. In fact, there are several posts in the support system where people are getting upwards of 10 support credits just for saying "you get no free time because of the system not working they way you want it to".

Then brad posts "we don't want your money if you're not happy with the service" - but I don't see any convenient way to arrange a refund being posted.

Weird world.

While at it, maybe make the directory more functional? I want to find all Russian-speaking LJ users in a given area, but that's not possible right now. (Russian-speaking can be defined as having cyrillic chars in the journal; similarly for other languages.)

I have no use for the directory other than to find out which users are reading a particular syndicated account. If this was listed on the feed's info page like a normal user info page, that would be fantastic.
